I'm not quite sure how this search started, but ever since it did it's been driving me insane. Please hold while I put on some typing music
Okay. Three days ago, for some reason I stumbled onto Don Marstein's Toonopedia website. The Warner Bros. section. Anyway, while looking at the first entry, the "Animaniacs" one, I remebered on old T.V. Guide article about the real cartoons locked in warner tower. Supposedly because of the sexuality displayed in them.
I had begun my search to find even the tiniest bit of evidence I didn't dream that entire article up. The Animaiacs bible, original character designs, NARF (The Nifty Animaniacs Reference File), Time Warner, and all of it's company owned websites, the alt.animaniacs.tv, postings, snopes, T.V. guide (what a worthless site), and any other possible link to animaniac info I was able to find.
Two days of searching, and I still came up empty, (although I can't get the "Monkey Song" out of my head). So, what I'm wondering now is, was this a UL, thing I dreamed up, absolute nonsense? It's driving me crazy. Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks -Boots

The most info I could get is that the Animaniacs were on the cover of TV guide Canada edition Mar 12, 1994. If your library has old issues you could check to see if that is the article you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. I checked their website but like I said, it's terrible. I'll swing by the library tomorrow and check, although I think it's only opened on the weekdays so I may have to wait till Monday.

I'm not sure if I fully understand your inquiry, but as I recall, it was simply a part of the cartoon plot that the Animaniacs characters actually had been created in the 1930s but due to their zaniness had been locked up in the branded water tower on the WB lot and not been able to escape until now. This would simply be a joke based on the fact that the design of the characters related to old cartoons from the 1930s, explaining their rather "archaic" and simple graphic look.

I think the OP may have been referring to some other Warner cartoon shorts that may exist which were never released due to suggestive sexual content.

Studios in Burbank, California. This description of the Warners is a tongue-in-cheek homage to Bosko, Warner Bros.' first cartoon character, whose cartoons were not highly regarded by many people.

Yepper!
Hmmm, that wikipedia entry has me confused (although all I read so far was what you quoted). Bosko was in fact highly regarded by people. His copy like counterpart, Buddy, was not higly regarded. Buddy was only made after The Warner Bros. lost Bosko to MGM after Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising moved.

I was just saying the same thing yesterday. I've been watching through one of the Looney Tunes DVD sets, and wondering when WB is going to get around to releasing more recent cartoons on DVD. I'm just dying to see Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain again, but it seems to have been off the air in Canada since just after it was released.

Well, there ARE some Warners cartoons "locked away"--not given public release--but rather than sexual content, their handicap seems to be racial insensitivity. The most notorious of these is "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs" (though the princess of the title is actually named So White). It had an all-black voice cast, but dealt exclusively in racial stereotypes. It's funny, but if you laugh at it today, you get a creepy feeling that you shouldn't be amused at all.

Yes, I kept running into the "Banned 12". Although, I'm quite sure the clip with sexual content, predates the other banned ones.

I think so Brain, but I don't think Michael Jackson would do that sort of thing.
(I can only pray my flatmate remembered that properly. Too awesome for words).

Macheath gave the the third Looney Tunes collection for my birthday...and lo and behold, Whoopi Goldberg introduces the cartoons by saying essentially, "Look, some of these cartoons have racist imagery in them, because that was accepted when they were made. It was wrong then. It's still wrong. But enjoy these cartoons anyway."
It is nice to have the cartoons uncensored, but I sort of understand why the box has an "adults only" label (a very small one) on the back. The set includes "The Mouse that Jack Built," with the cast of the Jack Benny show voicing cartoon mice--including a brown mouse as Rochester (though the cartoon incarnation, like Eddie Anderson's character on the Benny show, is definitely not subservient). And there are other throwaway gags. Oddly, though, or maybe not so oddly, when Whoopi is making her speech, the one clip that I recall flashing by was Speedy Gonzales, not a black stereotype.

Blame the kids for that one, we used to run around the house blurting quotes out to each other till we started making up our own. That was the reply I got when I yelled out "Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
