I've found several images on the net that point to some kind of disney cartoon with Donald Duck as a Nazi. They appear to be authentic, but...

Also I have this sound clip that I found on a random web site: http://content.ytmnd.com//53000/53693/sound.wav

Can someone tell me if this is true?

Ahhhh, "Lack of Context" strikes again!

Goggle "Der Furher's Face," you'll see that it was an anti-Nazi cartoon produced by Disney was Donald facetiously used as the main character.

Also a good synopsis:
http://disneyshorts.toonzone.net/years/1943/derfuehrersface.html

I downloaded the whole thing from there a while ago , unfortunately they've removed the file by now (and I haven't found a full download either). It was a great short, too. Well-deserved academy award.

Incidentily, it's also the only Donald Duck cartoon to ever win an Oscar. There's a decent article on it at Wikipedia.

Have to say that IMHO this is exactly why we need fileshare networks like BitTorrent. Walt Disney tries to rewrite history by pretending they never did anything like that - for some silly reasons. Try looking for "Banned cartoons" and see for yourself - it's hard to call that "Donald Duck" cartoon a "nazi".

See also http://www.rotten.com/library/culture/banned-cartoons/ for not-so-accurate, but still informative description.

While I'm not necessarily calling into doubt the revisionist business practices of Disney as a corporation, I don't think they've done much of anything (other than not showing it frequently) to try to make this particular Donald Duck cartoon fade to the background.

Case in point, the Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri, has a Poster Art exhibit with hundreds of WWII propaganda posters from lots of countries ("Loose lips sink ships," "I Want You, For the U.S. Army," etc.). They've got a TV playing a program of cartoons from the era, which could be called propagandish. There's a few Looney Toons, Bugs being drafted, Bugs vs. the Gremlin, and so on, and there's also this particular Donald Duck short.

I'm sure that if Disney didn't want people to see it, they wouldn't have agreed to let the Library show it. The visitor traffic through there is amazing.

By the way, if you are the least bit interested in Truman, WWII or the Cold War, and have a chance to go to the Truman Library in Independence, it's an absolutely fantastic museum.

I agree, since they released it on DVD.

In the same sense that other studios "pretend" they never made silent films, sure.

Disney's wartime films were made more for propaganda purposes than for entertainment value, and they were generally aimed at adult audiences. Once the war was over, their commercial appeal was quite limited, so they were largely shelved until a new market (home video) allowed Disney to sell them to those who appreciated them for their historic value.

Yes, it's only fair that if you want something, you should be able to steal it.

Exactly. It's a lot of pain to find some of the masterpieces - they are not republished and they rarely appear in rentals. It's not like I could get every major Chaplin film in Tsutaya chain store (similar to Blockbusters) to Japan. And I'm not talking overseas either.

BTW, this "same disappearence" doesn't prevent Disney and MGM from publishing their less politically correct cartoons in Europe.

No, if something is not commercially available and if it's copyright expired under Canada Copyright Act, I'd bet it's your duty not to let it slide into oblivion.

I'm lucky that Toronto has Reg Hartt.

Hmm. Wasn't Disney a member of the American Nazi Party before the war? Did he change his views?

Well, nothing suggests he was. AFAIK he was an outright anti-Communist, so I don't think he would ever stick with nazi = national socialism.
