The main character in the upcoming Disney horror flick Stay Alive, a guy named Hutch, now has his very own Myspace, in which he has been chronicling a few events leading up to the story of the film.

This has been done many times. Lots of people get bored and make myspaces for fictional characters... heck, I even created my cat a myspace once [Embarrassed]

But wow, I had no idea Disney was making Stay Alive. I didn't know they made horror films...

It's not Disney, it's Touchstone.
The movie looks like the videogame horror version of Jumanji

Touchstone is owned by Disney. Hence, Disney is making Stay Alive.

between fictional beings/non humans and the fake celebrity ones MySpace just can't get me to take it seriously. No offense meant to those who use it just too much abuse of it's system.

No. It is not a Disney film. It will not have the Disney name attached to it in any way except that Disney is Touchstone's parent company. Saying it is a Disney film is like saying that the shows on NBC are products of GE.

Disney and Touchstone are far less separate entities than NBC and GE.

To say Touchstone and Disney are one in the same is actually pretty true. Touchstone is really just a name Disney created so they could make films that skew older and won't hurt the family brand that is Walt Disney Pictures.

Same for Miramax, if I'm not mistaken. Why make 2 extra companies?

Miramax is a separate production company that used to partner with Disney for distribution, much on the old Pixar/Disney model.

The separate company names in this case only serve to distance Disney from "questionable" material.

Actually, Miramax used to be owned by Disney. Then they wanted to break off from Disney, so they are now their own company.

Furthermore, Disney doing this kind of thing was done looooong ago, when Walt was still alive. He wanted to have a seperate emergency services facility (Reedy Creek, JSYK) and have his own transportation services, so he created another company.

Any other details I can look up via a cast member website?

Miramax is still a Disney company. However, its founders-- the Weinstein brothers-- have left to form their own new company.

Um......Did Mickey Mouse show up to the set? Cause that's how you know it's a Disney product. Mouse Morale boost.

I remember when Rose Red, the Stephen King miniseries came out the official site had a "website" that treated the events like they were real, like it talked about the history of Rose Red, and had a link to the fictitious university where one of the character's worked.
Also, Galaxy Quest at one time had an "unofficial Website" detailing the episodes of the series and the bios of the characters. They were both quite impressive.
It's kind of the same thing, I like this suspension of disbelief.

Don't forget the "Rings" site that was started before Ring 2 came out... That was even more extreme IMO than these others because they actually had a whole message board set up as well as "journals" supposed to be from different people who saw the tape and had weird experiences.

The problem with this psuedo-reality is some people people actually belive it and will take it to extremes. For instance, The son of Sam believing a 2000 year old Lab was telling hime to kill. In people who are twisted anyway this sort of stuff can put them over the top for sure.

So can having a dog live next door to you, apparently, if we're going to use David Berkowitz as an example. [Roll Eyes]

ETA: Charles Manson based some of his "teachings" on the Beatles song Helter Skelter. Should we stop allowing people to record and play songs because insane people might misunderstand them?

Insane people who lived before recorded music and websites existed still managed to find fuel for their hallucinations and delusions.
