Comment: Here's a new variation on an urban legend that doesn't seem to be in your
files. This version of the story comes from Japan, and is given in the
translation as I originally heard it. I couldn't tell from the original
whether it was intended as fiction or a real FOAF story.

"So this guy was coming back from work and was very tired. He entered the
elevator of his apartment building. A guy hiding his face with a hat was
standing in there. He thought to himself, 'That's creepy,' but he had no
choice but to get into the elevator. He said 'good evening' to the guy,
but the guy ignored it. The elevator doors opened again and the creepy guy
got out, but on his way out the two men bumped into each other. The man
said 'Sorry,' but the other guy ignored that too, and he was still hiding
his face the whole time. So this guy thinks, 'Damn, there's a lot of
creepy guys around,' and goes back to his own apartment. And when he got
in he noticed there was blood where the creepy guy had bumped into him, so
of course he was beginning to wonder what the hell happened...

"A few days later, he was at home and he heard the doorbell ring. So he
looked out through the peephole and there was a cop standing there. The
cop says, 'A few days ago there was a murder in this building, and we're
asking around to see if anybody's seen any suspicious people.' But the guy
was really busy with work at the time, and if he said anything he'd have
gotten caught up in the investigation and it would have been a big mess,
so he just brushed it off and said no. And the cop was like, 'Okay, no
problem,' and he went away.

"Next day, this guy turns on the TV, and there's a news story about a
murder in his apartment building. So he's thinking, 'Whoa, it really DID
happen.' And the dude who did it got caught, and they showed his mugshot
on the screen... And when he looked at the screen, he recognized - the pol
iceman!!"

"...So why did the policeman come?"

"He was hunting down the witnesses! You see? If the guy had opened the
door, he'd have been offed in an instant!"

This story has its own wiki entry (but only in Japanese) under "Urban Legends".
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%83%BD%E5%B8%82%E4%BC%9D%E8%AA%AC
The page notes similarities to other stories, notably a TV drama similar to the Twilight Zone and an Agatha Christie story (which I can't track down because the title is either incorrect or a one-time only translation).

Anyway, it was first told on TV as a scary story by Shigeru Muroi, an actress, and through retelling became something she experienced personally, something she never claimed.

I was wondering what a "pol iceman" was until I got to the nest sentence.

The Agatha Christie story is one of the Tommy and Tuppence short stories called 'The Man In The Mist'
