I heard it as a cool, wet nose means a healthy dog, but a dry and/or warm nose means the dog is sick.

My Barney the Beagle almost always had a wet, cool nose. His nose was also coal-black whereas his muzzle was white which gave a "button nose" effect.

I'm skeptical about that whole theory...my Beulah the Beagle always has a dry, warm nose whenever she wakes up from a nap or whenever she's engaged in a low-energy activity (like snuggling with her human)

Gypsy the German Shepherd is the same way. I think maybe the dry-nose=sick is just a gauge. IIRC (its been 22 years), back when I was an assistant vet (see: cage cleaner) the vet told *us if a dog had a fever you could tell because the dog's nose would be hot.

*us=the other "assistant" and myself

Thanks, Diehard. In most online settings, all caps is considered shouting, and tends not to be well received.

From what I understand the wetness of the nose helps better trap scent particles.

In my experience, this varies between individuals. I've seen dogs with a constantly wet nose (including on who loved to snuggle this cold, wet nose against my neck when I was sleeping...), and others with a nose as dry as sandpaper, all of the same breed.

My boxer's nose get wet when she is having allergy problems like right now. Usually it's dry and feels neither particularly cold nor hot. But when it's running, it looks just like a little kid with snot running down the upper lip.

Poor puppy. No one is better at snot rockets than my dog, and they are usually aimed right into my face.

It's really an old wives tale that dogs should have wet/cold noses. It depends on the individual dog and also on the outer environment...
If a dog has a hot, dry nose and this is not normal for them, they could possibly be sick-- but it's not really a sure indication of anything.
