Comment: Truth or myth: bananas bought on ebay and mailed to Australia.

A colleague has been trying to convince me that the following item is
true. I live in Sydney, and I can say that one part of the article is
true, but some of it is rubbish. Yes, Cyclone Larry did destroy most of
Australia's banana crop, and prices have risen because of an import ban.
But no, I have never seen a sign saying "no bananas are kept here at
night". I find it unlikely that the fruit would get through Australia's
quarantine inspection, which uses both sniffer dogs and x-rays to find
food items (Australia maintains very strict quarantine restrictions).

I have looked on ebay.com.au and ebay.co.uk and found no bananas for sale.

What do you think? It sounds like another myth to me.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/food.html
quote:
The sale of food is regulated by the federal government and most state governments. Sellers who list food and food-related products should familiarize themselves with these laws before listing such items on eBay. Prior to listing any food on eBay, sellers should read the ‘Additional Information’ section to learn more about what food items are not permitted.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

Well, the item just says that these Yorkshiremen "plan" to sell the bananas, not that they've actually successfully done it. So if you're a columnist for a paper, and there are some drunk Yorkshiremen in a bar, and you overhear them say, "Hey, we could make a mint auctioning off bananas to the Aussies! We should totally do that!" Voila! You've got your quick-hit interest blurb for the next day.

I once ate an entire pound of beef jerky in the Melbourne airport. I was unaware of Australia's strict food restrictions, and I was taking my Aussie friend a nice pound of authentic New Mexican jerky. They told me they couldn't let it in, and I couldn't stand to let it go to waste, so I ate it. My jaw hurt afterward.

Well I'll tell you something, in Sydney at the moment bananas are going for about $14-$15 per kilo, when usually they would be around $3 per kilo. Cylcone Larry really did cut a swathe though our banana growing regions but luckily they are recovering, if slowly.

There have been reports that bananas have disappeared off trees in areas where they are still growing. Even suggestions that various organised crime "businesses" have seen stealing a few bunches of them as a get rich quick scheme. Frankly, I always assumed there were a lot of the fruit rotting on shelves - I don't know anyone buying them at those prices, but I guess some must be, or the prices would fall.
