I've decided (through my dislike of masks and hats, and not wanting to carry all the other crap around) to forget the fun costume I was thinking of with all the different crap.

So I want to be a pirate. I'm looking for a corset/vest/bodice thingy to wear, but can't find one by itself that isn't crazy expensive. At the Halloween stores I keep seeing one in a package that looks like what I want but in brown. I need black or red.

I like the way the one here looks

I also like the one with this cotume

Does anyone know where I can get something like that cheap? It doesn't need to be authentic-y or boned or Ren Faire quiality, just costume party "Hey, I'm a pirate!" quality.

So I said I was going as a witch but last night I was reading a magazine article that mentioned UbiSoft's "FragDolls", and I thought ... that would be an awesome costume. Bloodstained Raggedy-Anne carrying a machine gun.

I'll have to keep the witch (or witch-doctor, brilliant GenYus), for my daughter's school though.

The wings come attached to the corset? I could find some way to fix that, it's a gorgeous corset, even better than a black version of the brown one I saw. Thanks!

p.s.- is it my imagination or does the model look a lot like Keira Knightly?

Auntie Witch- at last I found somebody else who did the dice thing!

I did that when I was 12 with my friend...only we put the entire box OVER our heads and made holes for the arms. It was...rather awkward to walk around with the box on our heads (yes with eye holes). I THINK there's still a pic of us somewhere at my parents' house.. My friend also did a TV set for her younger sister.

Most creative one so far has been my niese...she was a whoopie cushion last year. By the time they got to our house (we're last always...hmph)it broke. I can't wait to hear what they are going to be this year...disappointed I'll miss it too...

My mum went to a costume party once as a popper( also called a juice box i think) She made a big box shape to go around her, made a straw and painted it up. I went to that party as a purple pansy, all green clothes with a big carboard purple flower around my face.

My mom sent a pattern from the 80's she used for my brother one year. It is way better than what is in the sewing stores right now.

I don't know if I'm going to have a costume this year because I so far have nowhere to wear it...although a friend DID suggest we should wear costumes to a haunted house.

I have already started decorating, though! I put up some window decorations and put out a few jack-o-lantern type things and some spooky dolls in the living room.

I love Halloween! I plan to go to as many haunted houses and other halloween events as possible this month (pet costume contests, corn mazes, pumpkin farms, etc...)

I am considering whether or not I should have some sort of party the weekend before Halloween this year. I had a pretty fun (but very small) Halloween costume party last year. It was funny because I think all but one of my guests were orthodox Jewish! Meaning they don't celebrate Halloween at all. Well, considering most of my friends are orthodox it's not really surprising, but it was kinda funny. This year I may just decorate the inside of the house for a party like last year but just invite some friends over to watch scary movies or something, not a "real" party.

Now as for the actual day/night of Halloween, I don't know if I will be doing anything. I wish I wasn't too old to trick-or-treat, or that I knew some kid I could take! [Razz] I'd love to go to a haunted house on Halloween but I think they are all horribly crowded that day...

Edited to add:
I just realized I DO have a costume--several actually... However they are for a convention coming up near the end of October and not actually for Halloween which is why I didn't think of them... [Big Grin] One costume I will probably be doing is a Resident Evil Umbrella Corp scientist (bloody lab coat with "Umbrella" patch and nametag, zombie face-makeup...)
Another costume- Anita Blake from Laurel K. Hamilton's books. Anita is a vampire executioner and necromancer. It's a pretty simple costume as she normally just wears regular clothes, although I may be getting a t-shirt or hat from Cafepress with a logo of a business that's mentioned in the books.
The third costume is going to be a 'cheap n easy' costume: a hacker, complete with either an OpenBSD t-shirt or a black shirt that says "Carpe Noctem", a laptop case, a light-up DEFCON badge, a G2 hat, etc... [Big Grin]

My 13-year-old step-daughter and I went to JoAnn's on Saturday to pick out a pattern and fabric for her costume. She decided on an Italian style Renaissance dress. I told her that it reminded me of Juliet, so she's decided that's who she's going to be for Halloween. We got the pattern and we also found some fabric for a good price. And now I have a lot of sewing to do! (I got it all cut out yesterday.)

I must confess, I rarely dress up on Halloween itself, since I do it so much during the rest of the year!

We have friends who sometimes have an open house on the weekend nearest the day, and people will dress up somewhat (or not) for that. I'm starting work on an interpretation of a Hogwarts professor's costume; if I get the outer robe done in time I might wear that, if they're having a party this year.

Otherwise, I don't bother - and I'd rather let others who only do this once a year have their fun! Sometimes I will wear a goofy wig or hat to work, but take it off after everyone has had a chance to 'admire' it. We don't get any trick-or-treaters at our house, although we keep a bag of candy on hand just in case.

We had a quasi-grown-up Halloween party in April at my apartment (quasi=college age).
One of the things that lots of people liked is that we rented/pulled out from under beds a bunch of "scary" movies - everything from Evil Dead to Ghostbusters to Carrie.

Odd question:

I don't know how many children live in my apartment complex (I know there's at least 3). Should I plan that there may be a number of people coming, and buy a bag of candy?

Deep Blue -

If you'll be inside, you can cover the walls in black plastic (about $20 for a 100-foot roll at Lowe's or Home Depot) with push-pins, which makes any decorations really stand out because your house becomes a cave.

Fried mice are a great Halloween party food. Get chili peppers with stems; cut them open, remove the seeds, and stick in a piece of pepperjack cheese. Coat them in whatever batter you use for frying chicken and fry them - they look like mice, complete with tails.

I love your costume! It's really well-done and you look great in it too. Not only did you save $25 but I'd bet the store version is much cheaper-looking and not as nice. The commercial costumes you can find always seem to use the ugliest cheap fabrics they can find for Halloween costumes... [Razz]

I'll be going as either a younger, pudgier, long-haired Helen Parr or an older, pudgier, red-haired Violet Parr, depending on which way you want to look at it. I'll wear the Incredibles logo sweater I made earlier this year with black jeans and gloves, and possibly paint on a mask. I'm working Halloween night in a fairly warm facility so I don't expect it to last very long before I have to take the sweater off, but I'll certainly show up in it.

I was going to just dress up as a little Victorian girl (I look about 13, so it's no wild stretch) I have a mauve victorian short dress, knee high stockings, victorian boots, and a big bow for my hair but then one of my friends started a planning a major party for the 27th and I went the sexy route.

My BF was rather fond of the sexy firefighters costume, but I thought it would make my hips look big (which they are, I just don't need to advertise that). So I picked a Beer Garden Girl costume. I haven't bought it yet, I'm waiting for payday this week. Hopefully the store isn't out by then.

The BF is thinking of going as a Monk, priest, or keg of beer.

I'm going to be a sexy moth [Smile]

For make-up, I'll do a black, grey, taupe, and brown moth-version of a butterfly mask, with sad, ultra kohled smudgy eyes; vampy lips; shimmer on cheeks and chest

Hair: Either curled, but with spray-in gel and twisting to make it a little less princessy looking, or a long grey wig.

Costume: Old, long, grey chiffon skirt, shredded at the bottom, worn as a tube dress; a grey lace corset over-top; grey tights with black fishnet over top, arm and leg warmers made from grey faux fur, fuzzy grey antennai headband; wings made from wire and layered pieces of shredded, sheer fabric; black or grey long-sleeve tee for warmth, grey heels

I'm thinking about getting a little lantern to carry around with me, and maybe a sweater with a "bite" mark cut out of it [Smile]

We just got in a bunch of pretty inexpensive wings at work. Look through the "Halloween accessories" section at HotTopic.com and see if there's anything that works. There's a neat pair (although maybe a bit too colorful for your costume) that attach to the wrists, too, so they move with your arms.

I was looking for wings last year and the local costume shop wants an arm and a leg for the exact same feather wings, it's crazy.

I was at a Halloween party a few years ago where there was a guy dressed up as Michael Jackson (curly wig and face mask) and his wife/girlfriend dressed as a boy (it was during all the trial hoopla). Like your friend, she was very petite. It was wrong and so very funny all at once.

I made some pretty nice looking wings like that... I saw some really cool "punk fairy" type black wings at a Halloween store but they were horribly expensive so I made my own. I bought some stiff tulle-type material and some gauzy silky type material, and ripped it up and attached to metal hangers. Everyone thought they were really cool!
I also have a pair of red fairy wings I made from pantyhose and hangers...

Hrmm....I try to be crafty but I'm not terribly good at it. I should really try the hanger, pantyhose/tulle thing.

Let me know how it goes for you [Smile]

I'm toying with the idea of dressing up as one of the ladies in the Girls Gone Wild soft porn movies. I'd put a few stitches in a T-shirt so it would be permanently hiked up over my boobs, then I would tape a black cardboard bar over them with the words "TOO HOT FOR TV!!!" written across it. If I weren't living in Boston, I'd go all out with boy shorts and slippers, but I think I'll need something with a little warmth on the bottom. Does that sound clever or trashy?
