Baby D go his 4 month shots yesterday. We've had no problems with any of the other wounds. Gave him Tylenol before and after, he was fine. This morning he was crying in pain (I'm assuming it was pain, he stopped after some medicine) and all was good until after his latest nap. He just woke up a bit ago, and I noticed a bubble/blister near where he got his shots yesterday. Do you think this could be a reaction? He's never had one before, and it's not right *there* on the shot, about an inch above. I put a bandaid on it, so I'm not tempted to play with it.

Haven't called the doctor yet, no temperature, he's contently playing in the pack n play a I type.

Any ideas? Should I be worried?

Dominic had something similar with his shots. It was a hard(ish) lump right over the shot site. I panicked and called our doctor and he said not to worry about it. Then he said it was a good question and thanked me for calling him. It went away on its own in a couple weeks. However, it won't hurt to give your doctor's office a call and ask.

*noisemaker*

Throwing myself a micro pity party, owing to the fact that Khaled decided to wait till 2.5 to go through the Terrible Twos. I have days where he is so cute and lovey followed by moments where I just don't want to NFBSKing look at him. Any form of discipline just seems to work in the short term.

And I know that it's totally normal for kids his age to be asserting what independence they have and it's all normal and something I just have to ride through. But when he's being really really rotten, I just wish I could sell him to the circus. [Smile]

Anyone here have experience with premature babies? My cousin had an emergency c-section last Friday at 28 weeks and gave birth to Lilly weighing just 1lb 10oz. I didn't post about it before because every hour counted over the weekend, but she is now off the ventilator and we're quietly hopeful about her chances. Thanks gang.

{{{{{{{{{vibes}}}}}}}}} for Lily and Neffti's cousin.

I love the name Lily. I would love to name a daughter of our's Lily, but we want to name our son (if we have one) Clark (after me!) and Lily and Clark is waaay to close to Lois and Clark. [Smile]

Hugs to the whole Neffti family, really gentle ones for little Lily. I know several people who have healthy kids now that started out as tiny preemies. Our doctor told us that they can try to save a baby at 20 weeks, and will almost always succeed after 26 weeks.

A 28 week gestation baby in 2006 has excellent prospects for a perfectly normal life with little or no long-term issues. They'll be watching for breathing, eating and kidney function to let the baby go home (well, they'll also want her to triple in size, as tiny as she is, but that'll come pretty quickly). If she's already breathing, she's doing great at that size!

My first was born at 32 weeks. The fact that baby Lilly is already breathing on her own is a wonderful sign! The only real advice I can give is be there for your cousin. She is going to on a roller coaster of emotions for the next couple of months. There is not much that anyone besides the doctors and nurses can do for baby Lilly right now. But mom and dad will need a good healthy support system for them. I remember calling the hospital first thing in the morning to check on Ms. Hara and being heart broken because she lost an oz because she had diarrhea and then there where the triumphant times when she was able to come off the oxygen. Like I said, it’s a roller coaster and it will be for several months.

And if it helps any, know that my preemie is turning 12 yrs old on Friday & is almost as tall as her old momma. [Wink]

Sounds like our household right now.
James has gone through some kind of sore throat-fever thing that seems to have left a screamie-meemie in place of our adorable, easy-going boy.

Last night was the high point of everything. His fever had broken, but he wasn't happy no matter what we did. Of course this was at 3-5 a.m. My husband was so frustrated that when James started to cry while I was rocking him, he stamped his foot in anger. James quieted down, but then I was crying.

We went to the pediatrician who noticed the red throat and said to just give tylenol for the fever and keep him hydrated. He took a throat culture for strep, but it must have come back negative because we did not get a call when the dr. said they would if it was positive.

I think it's some version of hand-foot-mouth disease, except it seems like it's only the mouth that's affected. He seems to get fussy during feeding.

Thank you. [Smile] We of course think he is simply the Cutest Baby Ever. [Wink]

The funny thing about Grandpa...my parents are divorced and have hated each others' guts for years. Friday evening, the two of them drove down to the hospital together to see us. I was a bit nervous the entire time they were in the room, frankly, because I'm way more used to them communicating through lawyers!!

My father is also a practicing alcoholic, which is a shame, really, because as the pictures show, he's a perfectly normal human being when he's not drinking. I normally don't talk to him much at all because I refuse to deal with his crap anymore. But he adores and worships his grandson... [Wink]

Thanks for the advice everyone! Lilly is progressing well, but you're right to say it's Lilly's Mum who needs the emotional support. She's been on "stay positive" autopilot for the first few days, but it's hitting her now.

ZORRO! Just caught up with your news! Congratulations on your lovely boy! He's a smasher! Sorry you still have difficulties with your parents to consider at this time, but if they can manage a journey together to meet their grandson, that's got to be an imporvement hasn't it? Hope you have plenty of space from all that to enjoy getting to know your son.

Holy cow, I have missed alot!

LPP... screw those jerks (figuratively, not literally!) but I'll top your "you're too small" story with one of my own from this past weekend.

I was attending a fundraising event on Saturday and a woman was there that I know from school. (her kids and dd go to school together). SHe came up to me and said "I didn't know you were expecting!" Told her I ws not and she thought I was messing with her. Again told her I was not as I downed a beer. b*&ch! Time for weight watchers!

btw, couldn't blame it on babyfat, dd is 7!

Time to catch up... I've been having a few consecutive craptastic days. I've posted a little here and there, but I feel like I haven't actually been paying attention to what's been going on, so time to get back to speed.

Neffti... that whole situation sounds like it was very scary, but it is very encouraging that, so early, Lilly is breathing on her own. That's a biggie for premies. Also eating on their own and regulating their own body temp, real biggles. No matter how well she is doing, tho, her mum can expect her to stay in the hospital until whenever her due date would have been. Sometimes premies get sent home sooner if they're doing really well, but most doctors want to keep them to their due date just to make sure all is going well.

Zorro... Frank is such a cutie! And with the added bonus of getting your mom and dad to call a truce, even if it's just a short one. The advice on managing gas was spot on... lie Frank on his back and curl his knees into his stomach in a slow, smooth motion. He might get to the point where he can do this himself. Saleh woke up early this morning and, while I was still eating my breakfast, grabbed his feet and pulled them up as high as they would go and cranked out a few really good ones (nearly rattled the windows! [Big Grin] ). Also as far as nursing goes, that book you took off my hands is a great resource, and don't forget the Lansinoh after EVERY feeding... at least until your boobs have made the adjustment. With Khaled, I would have stopped nursing after 2 weeks if not for Lansinoh. My nipples were all chapped/calloused, and one of them had a blood blister. Lansinoh after every feeding (tho it totally seemed unnecessary) was a lifesaver. But even if it doesn't work out and you go over to formula, he's still going to be as cute and wonderful as ever!

Fuchsia... I don't remember the ages, but all kids go through phases of being rotten little NFBSKers. It just hits us really hard when they're ordinarily all sweet and wonderful. For example, Monday and Tuesday were days from hell. I got much less sleep than I was used to and Khaled was King TantrumFace. But then yesterday was WONDERFUL. That's the kind of day I'm used to. Some things can be attributed to sickies, some to growing pains, some to too much gas, some to changes at home (moving, new pet, new baby, etc.), some to asserting their own independence... and then there's some that just makes you wonder what pod person has snatched your baby in the middle of the night.

Today is starting okay... other than Saleh waking up 2-3 hours before he usually does. We'll see...

Zorro, he's beautiful! What a doll! I know everyone always says "enjoy this time because it goes so fast!" And my reaction was "good, because I want Jason to start doing something!" But the one cool thing is, you can pretty much schedule naps, if you're able to sleep during the day (I'm not a good nap taker), because he'll be sleeping regularly in between feedings with tiny bits of alertness. And right now he's small enough that you can hold him and cuddle him and let him fall asleep in your arms without him squirming all over the place. [Wink]

Jason gets his first 'school pictures' today at daycare. *grin* (actually, they should already be done!)

He's crawling (well..sort of...he moves forward, just not in the traditional crawl...he does a low crawl) and laughs a lot. [Smile] And after a scary time where he'd lost some weight, he is not back to where he should be. I'm just hoping he starts to put some weight on again soon. I think he's getting taller.

And he loves his exersaucer. [Big Grin]

ali, I wonder if you have the same company for pictures. Do your school pictures have apples in a cart and a backdrop of a country lane with fall trees?

All the babies in Rowan's class had to change clothes for their pictures because it was 95 degrees outside. The pretty fall picture would look odd with shorts, but a turtleneck would be child cruelty in that weather! We were so sad that Rowan had a big scratch on her face for pictures. Now I'm glad they were then and not now, she still looks like she has the plague due to her awful rash.

Last night, due to the medicine for her rash I guess, Rowan fell asleep at 6pm, 2 hours early. Therefore, she was wide awake and laughing 2 hours early, too. At 4am!!! Staying awake today has been a challenge.

Oh, Zorro... I also wanted to add with regard to the gas thing... try to make sure Frank is burping well after feedings. Saleh was a really stingy burper, so I had to come up with lots of different strategies. Here are a few:

--Make sure you're patting his back between or just below the shoulder blades. I've caught myself many times patting much lower which, of course, does no good.

--Try patting a little harder than you think you should. I know that newborns are just so darn tiny and floppy, but that doesn't mean you have to treat them like they're made of tissue paper. Don't wallop them so hard that you're knocking the breath out of them, but a little more firmly can sometimes help.

--Take a deep breath and hold it while burping (exhale and re-inhale as needed so you don't pass out of course!). This will make your stomach puff out and push a little better against his, to help nudge that bubble out.

--Firmly press and stroke his back from bottom to top. Since you probably spend some snuggle time anyway rubbing his back up and down, press down a little more firmly for the up-stroke.

--Bounce while you burp, patting on the down part of the bounce. I don't know exactly why, I'm sure someone could start talking physics and a compounding of force or something, but this would usually that the most stubborn of burps out. This or the deep breath and hold method.

--When Frank gets a little older (stronger neck/back muscles and all that), take him for a walk with a little extra bounce in your step, or give him a little squeezie hug. Saleh will usually burp on his own if I'm carrying him around without me doing anything special (although I'm sure that just the simple act of holding him to my chest or side may provide all the "squeeze" he needs). It does worry me a bit tho when he burps this way. I'm often cleaning up boob cheese afterwards! [Big Grin]

Help! Rowan has horribly chapped lips and chin. Any suggestions for helping her to heal? We're doing chapstick on the whole area for tonight.

Also, hubby is worried about the binky (pacifier). We have 0-6 month size binkues. Rowan is 6 months old. Hubby thinks it's dangerous to use the smaller binky, that it will mess up her mouth. He wants to buy new 7-12 month ones.

Rowan had completely stopped the binky 1 month ago for 2 weeks. She got hooked again when we flew to LA for Labor Day. She went back to night only when we got home, although we did give it to her more while she was sick. I hate to buy all new binkies when she'll hopefully be binky-free within the next month.

Does anyone know anything about the sizes?

Kismet- Why don't you buy one or two binkies for right now and see what happens? I don't know much about sizes and I think the ones you have would probably be fine for another month or so but if it makes hubby feel better just one or two isn't too big a deal, right?

Starling is prone to chapped skin around her mouth. We make sure the area is clean and completely dry and then put a layer of Aquaphor ointment on it. It usually clears up pretty quickly.

I agree with Starla; go ahead and get one or two, rather than buying a whole bundle of them. They're not expensive, right? If you just buy a couple, you won't feel like it's a huge waste of money if she gives them up soon.

Actually, I found 2 size 2 binkies in her closet when I was cleaning it out today. So now the whole kismet family can be happy. And yeah, it's not like they're expensive, so I don't know why it bothered me. Sometimes I worry about the stupidest things.

Kismet, I've used A&D ointment on James' chin and face when it gets rashy (drool).

That brings me to this topic: What baby hygiene products do you use on yourself, even after your baby has outgrown them?

Me:
A&D ointment is good for rashes and any kind of sore, and I'll probably keep a tube around for a while after James is passed the diaper and drool stage.

GOld Bond Baby Powder: It doesn't smell too babyish, so I use it under the boobs or around the thighs.

Palmer's Stretch Mark Cream. I don't use it on the stretch marks becasue I know they'll never go away. However, it makes a great face cream and probably will prevent some wrinkles.

When I was in late pregnancy, I used the Huggies diaper cream under the boobs and around my crotch because I had nasty heat-rash.

Told her I ws not and she thought I was messing with her. Again told her I was not as I downed a beer. b*&ch! Time for weight watchers!

*Wince* Ouch. That happened to a friend of mine at Baskin Robins. When she said she wasn't expecting, the woman snerked, "Wow, then you really shouldn't be eating that, should you?"

Baby wipes. In my purse, by the potty. I wiped off a dirty table at the mall today, in fact.

Aquaphor? I'llhave to look for that, I've never heard of it. Thanks.

It's usually right next to Eucerin on the lotion aisle. They are made by the same company. Aquaphor is like heavy-duty Eucerin.

We found the Aquaphor this afternoon and it's already working. She looks better and more importantly, it seems to be bugging her much less. Thanks for the suggestion!

Still having problems with the whole crib thing. he sleeps just fine when someone is holding him- he'll sleep for four hours at a clip! but the minute you put him down, he wakes up. *sigh* We have a noise machine in the room, leave a light on, have piled blankets around him to make him feel more enlcosed...we're not sure what else to do at this point except to let him cry it out, the thought of which bothers me more than I ever thought possible.

The good news is, though, since we dumped all that powdered formula, the gas is pretty much gone- it still happens once in a while, but I'm thinking that probably happens with all babies at one point or another, so I'm not as bothered by it.

Zorro - that's why we started cosleeping with our oldest. At the time, we didn't know anything about cosleeping, or that anyone else did it, we just knew that it was the only way we could all get some sleep. It worked for us.
