Well, yeah, I'd say he is obligated. Part of being in a wedding party is accepting that you may not like what you're going to have to wear, but you have to wear it if you want to participate. I think it's pretty rare that wedding parties get to wear whatever they want, particularly at theme weddings. Having him not match shouldn't be considered an option at all.
Part of inviting people to be in your wedding party is making sure they know what's going to be involved (duties, expense, wardrobe) and making sure they can gracefully decline with no hard feelings. Explain to him what he'd have to wear when you ask and leave it up to him.

GenYus, would your friend be more accepting of dressing up if you gave him a choice in costumes? Nothing that wouldn't match your period, of course. I know that my bridesmaids are much more excited about the dresses since they've been involved in picking them out.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I asked him and he said he'd be willing, depending on the costume. We'll probably get together and discuss costume options this weekend.

I've seen some pretty bad tux combos in my time -- anyone remember the 70s and 80s prom tuxes -- frily shirts, edged with color, PLUS matching cumberbunds? Now put those on 20-30 year olds in the late 90s -- not a pretty picture!

I found THE dress. Unfortunatly it is 3 and a half times the budget i set down for my dress, and that is on sale, it's the last one, and a size 10. We managed to get me fairly comfortabley into it( i a generally a size 12), but it would look better if i lost about 5 kgs. Oh and it would cost me an additional $400-500 in airfares to go back down to get it. Just my luck to find something perfect and not be able to have it, or maybe i have set myself an unrealistic budget for the dress. Sigh, i can still dream about how pretty it looked.

Have you got a pic of it, ange? Someone might be able to suggest something similar.

No i don't the store didn't allow pictures because they say they have unique designs and would like to keep it that way, yet have a website up with the pictures on, but unfortunatly this dress was discontinued and therefore the photos have been taken off due to it being unreorderable stock. It was a fairly normal two piece, with the top being a lace up back and all sequined and embroidered, and the skirt have a largeish train(not 100% sure i want a train but thats by the by) with the same sort of designs on it. I would need it in white though, not ivory, as my bridesmaids are wearing yellow and blue.

Yay bthyb! What a fun slideshow... Congratulations! I really like your first dance song and your dress was awesome. It looked like you had a lot of fun (which is what weddings are all about, after all!)
