This week is Banned Book Week, one of those things it used to be hard to believe was needed in America. To "celebrate," I'd like to spotlight one title each day from the American Library Association's list of the 100 most frequently challenged books for the years 1990-2000. I'll tell you a bit about the book and ask anyone who's also familiar with the work to chime in with their thoughts.

Our first title, number 88 on the list, is Martin Hanford's title of endless quest, Where's Waldo.

I'm not kidding.

Did you see that last comment on the original article? I dearly hope that person was being ironical.

Alas, I suspect that even if irony was intended, the message was exactly what the Ban Waldo people would say.

What about the SET of man-boobs just South of her.

Why is the blond just North of her holding that
guys ankles?

Why is the old man hiding behind the towel/blanket?

Is the man in armor wearing pants?

Why does the guy next to the 'male couple' have his legs (and blanket) in the air?

And the man just South of her--is that really a shovel, or is he just happy to see the Waldo-boob?

The whole lot of them are pervs!

I think he is looking at the woman at his feet and her missing hand! The look on her face explains exactly what she is doing.

Speaking of faces, what the heck is that guy doing directly above Miss Boobage (just right of the feet of the guys "fighting")? Just what is going on behind that striped thing he is in?

Wait a minute! Is that guy in the lower left corner naked?

It's not at the end any more - the comments are still active.

I don't think that people who complain about these things necessarily believe what they're saying. I tend to come into contact more with people who are activists in a different political sense - and one I tend to agree with - but I often don't agree on specific points, and I do wonder how much thought they themselves put into it that they can espouse their particular positions with such certainty (even though I tend to agree with those positions).

So, basically, I reckon some people make these complaints for a hobby because they're not particularly into it but are told to by somebody who might be even less into it than they are, but is also doing it for "reasons of decency" or whatever the cause is.

Actually, thinking about it, I can't see any cause that's so absurd as to lead people to complain about "Where's Waldo / Wally?" unless somebody at some point is taking the piss. So I reckon that one person who was taking the piss incited a lot of people who vaguely agreed about "decency" to complain about something they had no personal opinion on.

Either that, or the original person genuinely believed their complaint and was insane.

Did anyone mention the woman in the black two-piece just south of the man in the red pants? No doubt about what she's doing.

Are we all eee-bil? -

Has anyone else thought what I just thought? I think we should all go back over to that site and post our observations. I'll go first and post a link to the pic. -

ETA: Sorry, vanilla. I just saw that you mentioned the woman in question.

ETA: I just posted on that site but don't know if it "took" or not. It seems that comments are reviewed before they appear on the page.

See, my interpretation of the scene is that the woman was sunbathing facedown with her top unstrapped (presumably in order to get a more even tan on her back), and then some guy came along and poked her back with his ice cream cone. I don't blame her for flinging her arms in the air, arching her back, and exclaiming loudly. (Speaking of things that seem dirty...) And yes, that lewd, crude, rude dude who did it should be banned from the beach!

You can totally see her nipple protruding. Or something like that; it's a little hard to tell because it's so tiny. But still! EVIL!

Bummer. I need to put Banned Books Week on my calendar for next year; I always miss it.

However, I do make sure that the little shoes & I read at least one of the banned books as soon as I figure out it's banned books week. :-D

Can anyone explain to me why A Wrinkle in Time is on the list? Then again, I don't really understand why anyone wants to ban books anyway.

The plot thickens ...

At the risk of great personal pain and embarrassment, I ventured into our community's new Children's Library to see if I could spot the controversial "Waldo boob" in its native habitat.

The "At the Beach" scene is the second scene in the first "Waldo" book ("Where's Waldo?"), and much to my surprise I found that scene does not show a topless sunbather -- the supposedly topless sunbather's top is not lying on her towel, but rather is securely fastened around her chest:

The book I scanned this from is the second edition (1997), and it's clearly different from the original edition (1987) because it advertises on the cover that it's a "Special New Edition" and Waldo is "Somewhere New in Every Scene!"

So, if the topless woman really exists, she's apparently only in the first edition of "Where's Waldo?" (which our library did not have a copy of).

snopes, I suppose there were myriad protests which led to the covering up of the suspect boob in the second edition. (?)

Canuck, check out the upper left corner. Apparently that action and everything else is the same.

I'm guessing that as it features witches it would be due to occult/satanism, as shown on the Challenges by Type list. It makes interesting reading, top scorer is "offensive language" with 811, whilst "innacurate" only gets 36.

I don't know about the rest of them but The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice), probably shouldn't be anywhere a child might get a hold of them. Actually they should probably be on a seperate shelf- with a warning.

Don't get me wrong- they are good books, I actually own a copy of the first and third books, but I am not sure if they belong in the public library.
