Comment: The story about the boy whose father smashed his fingers and then commited suicide, might be true. I have a friend who knows the man that had commited this atrocity. I live in Barren Springs va and this was supposed to have taken place somewhere around hillsville va. I can check with my friend and see what she says.

Comment: This story is true. But not as you have it told. While stationed at DLI (Defense Language Institute) in Monteray California between 1989-1990 a very similar thing happened. A lower ranking service man living in the Naval barracks began having bloody discharge form his rectum and extreme morning headaches. He went to the hospital on Fort Ord and the doctor told that this was common for a gay person to have. And informed him that he was going to inform his commander to proceed with dishonorable discarge proceedings. When the blood work report returned there was evidence of a high level of ether still in his blood stream. At this point the doctor was inclined to believe the service man that he was infact not gay. Also at this point the doctor contacted the MP's. They arrested the three roommates and searched the four man bay. Above the ceiling tile they found a bottle of ether and an old sock. At this point the guilty roommate broke down and confessed everything. He was taken to the brig and was sencented to time in Levinworth. The assulted service man left the service also with a medical discharge with full benifits. You may choose not to believe me, but I was there. You can check my service records.
He was there? What as the traumatised victim, intollerent doctor or sick rapists? None of them are worth boasting about. Sounds like some homophobic army UL mixed with false memories to me!

I also was at DLI in 1989-1990. It didn't happen. I heard that it did, of course. The version I heard was Airforce, not Navy, 2-man room, not 4. Of course it happened in the class before mine. I've met other DLI graduates from later and earlier classes who also heard the story...always in the class before.

I saw that show. It was Raquel Welch with the cat and she did say "Would you like to pet my pussy?" (Exact quote). I can't quote Carson's response exactly but it was close to "Sure, if you'll just move that cat!" or "Sure, if you get rid of the cat!". He did not say "damn" or "out of the way".
Again, I saw the show personally. It did happen.
Errr..I never thought I would agree with someone who disagrees with a snopes article but...my parents have a video called something like "Greatest Moments on TV" that has a bunch of clips from old tv shows. I did see this clip (and is was Zsa Zsa) and the only reason I remember is because I thought it was hilarious.
However, I saw this at least 6 or 7 years ago and it is possible that I was on crack . I'm going to see if my parents still have that tape and if I'm right I'll make a copy and send it to Barb and Dave.
I'll let you guys know what I find.

But why am I so positive that I saw this?
It's what's called a manufactured memory. Basically, you convinse yourself so strongly that you saw something, or that something happened that didn't, that you honestly think it happened.
Read more about the whole "cat" thing on snopes page here.

I believe the concept is "manufactured memory," and it refers to incidents where a person hears a story frequently enough that it becomes imprinted as memory. This is the same reason people often claim to have memories of very early childhood--they've heard the stories of "oh, you were so cute when you were two years old and did whatever thing" that they actually think they remember it happening.
Or, to paraphrase Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Your brain can deceive you, don't trust it."

But...but..I can see the cat on Zsa Zsa's lap!
But I know what you mean. I often think I remember chewing on legos on my brother's bed when I was 7 months old, but that's probably because I've seen a picture of it so many times.
Well, I guess this means that urban legends will continue on and on and on and on....
I like this story. One of these days, I'm going to steal it and turn it into a novel. Would that be unethical?
I think ULs are in the public domain, more or less by default. If you do write such a novel and later regret it, I'll gladly take your ill-gotten gains off your hands for you!
Of course, the story is highly plausible, since it's SO hard to find gay sex partners on a college campus!
Re "This Bud is not for You", a story out of a town near Bakersfield, CA, which you staff researched and reported as false, please be advised. About two or three weeks after the World Trade Center tragedy, I emailed all on my mailing list stories of what my wife and I learned of Muslims here in Sherman, Texas celebrating the senselesws slaughter of three thousand unsuspecting, innocent victims of Muslim terrorists. On story was told tyo my wife by one of her customers at the J.C,. Penny store where she is an associate. It was almost the exact same story as "This Bud is not for you.", except her customer's husband was delivering an order for a beer distributor on 9/11/01 and did not know anything about what was happening in NYC. He heard loud laughing, clapping and whisltling coming from a room behind the counter in an Arab owned convience store, looked around the corner and saw ten or twelve Arab men dancing asround a TV set. He later realized, after learning of the disaster, it was almost the exact time the first tower started collapsing. Inasmuch as this customer related this story to my wife within three or four days after 9/11/01, I doubt very seriously that any "hoaxers" had time to make the story up and get it started making the rounds on the Internet, her customer received the hoax email, and made it up as her own. Therefore, even though your organization found the above named story to be false, I believe the story my wife's customer related is absolutely true, and it was somehow "picked up" on by "hoaxers" and circulated using different locales with certain elements changed, or there is a phenomenal coincidence.

Comment: I find your site interesting and very useful. I use it often to check out the many stories that I receive. I find it odd that you check out stories or rumors that are more than 50 years old (ie Casablanca, Manhattan, etc.). Are these fillers because there a lack of current rumors?

We prefer to think of them as retro-legends.

Comment: In regards to the article "Bono of Contention," a friend of mine's father attended a U2 concert in Ireland earlier this year and related to him this very story. It would seem strange for the father to completely make up this story and tell his son it as something he witnessed, so I believe this rumor does not deserve the label of "false." You might instead want to take another look into it.
