(3)What is the assurance that “Snopes” information is any more correct/true than some of the e-mail trash floating around?.
(B) How do I use “Snopes” to investigate a particular subject?
Thank you.
First off there is no assurance that the info is correct. Nothing is absolute. Just like skepticism, variables are shown and thus a conclusion is drawn. This is not to say that the conclusion may change later on. This is the beauty of science. However,as question B surely indicates,a tin foil hat wearer, like yourself, would not be comfortable with the above answer. In other words Snopes is all wrong. There really was a Munchkin hanging in a tree, alligators in the sewers of NYC,Mikey from the Life cereal commercials did die from eating Pop-Rocks,there was no Moon landing,..................

So who feels sorry for her sis & grandparents?
They were obviously trying to get this person to stop sending all those chain e-mails. [Of course, this could have been written by anyone I send snopes links to too - when I receive those chain e-mails, I need to respond that way. ]

There is a mystic cabal that makes the ultimate decision whether an article is an urban legend or not. I assure you that every urban legend here is an urban legend. If you want urban legends that are NOT urban legends, may I suggest www.foxnews.com
Some are old, some are new. If you wait a while, the new ones will get older. I also assure you that the old ones will not get any newer.
Consider yourself informed.

Most people see conspiracy theorists as needlessly overcomplicating simple matters, but I see them as quite the opposite. The utmost simplicity of all : if someone doesn't agree or if evidences point to a conclusion different than yours, they're part of "it". Tada! All the rest does not matter much.

Cool. Barbara and snopes and cloak-and-dagger men. And it must mean Jenn is really Agent 003.

My favorite part of that email is this:

We're politically influential?? Woo-hoo!!

*Laughs* Sorry after reading all these post I just have this image of Barbara and David in some dark room somewhere presiding over rows and rows of the snopesters, all clad in dark red robs chanting.
Seriously though I've had several people ask me why it is I'm skeptical of a rumor I hear second or third hand or in an email chain, but I'm not skeptical of this site itself (I'll often reply to rumor emails by sending a link back to the person to the snopes page that deals with the rumor in question).
And it seems that some of these comments, and the ones in the messages on this thread, basically boil down to "Why should I believe you?" It's an knee-jerk reaction to someone who has debunked a lot of well believed stories.
This might be a legitimate gripe if snopes didn't add several "Sources" at the end of every article.

Yeah but he's not quoting my hairstylist's cousin, or the Weekly World News, or any of those people who *really* know what's going on. So how can you trust him?

Hans-Otto Schneider from Alsfeld, Germany.
He was the much loved Computer E-Mail Boss that served the internet dilligently since 1984 and is credited with almost singlehandedly bringing e-mail into the mainstream. Sadly, he died not many years after e-mail really took off - August 16th 1998 - but he will forever be remembered as the first and most influential "Computer E-Mail Boss".
Almost as soon as news of Hans-Otto's death spread the helm was ceremoniously turned over to one David Mikkelson, an American folklorist. This successor has generally been well accepted despite having big shoes to fill. With the exception of one irrate and confusing comment sent to him indicating dissatisfaction with his performance and enquiring about the passing of Mr. Schneider, his tenure has been rock solid - if slightly uneventful compared to the wacky antics that were the hallmark of Mr. Schneider's days in the top job.

Comment: Who are you people to say wether something is true or not. I don't believe just because you say that something reported in email is untrue that it is. What gives you the right to judge, and where do you get your information. I don't recall "Snopes" being classified as a moderator for the Internet? Since when did "Snopes" usurp such power? I trust the government and media more than I do your site.
