To give the answer in more detail: add all the ending digits. If what you get is still a multi-digit number, add them all again. Keep adding all the digits until you are left with one digit. Then subtract that digit from 9. (Or if the digit IS 9, use that; that's the reason they don't let you use zeroes. If you DO select a zero, the computer would guess 9.)

So if your number (after subtraction) is 6383175444 (that's really what I got when I tried a ten-digit number), and your selected digit is the 7, then the computer just adds all the digits.

6 + 3 + 8 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 38
3 + 8 = 11
1 + 1 = 2

And 9 - 2 = 7, the number you chose. That's how it does it.

Stand back everyone! I'm a mathematician!

Why does 0.999... repeating equal 1.00?

Here's one way to look at it. What is 1/10th of 1.000? That's right, 0.100. Subtract this from 1.000 and you ar left with 0.900.

Now let's do the same to 0.999... 1/10th of 0.999... is 0.0999.... Subtract this from 0.999... and you get 0.9000.... or simply 0.900.

Since we get the same results using the same sets of rules, 0.999... = 1.000.

Whew!

That complicated?? Why not just:
1/3 = .333~
2/3 = .666~
3/3 = .999~

Or the more common:

x = .9~
10x = 9.9~
10x - x = 9.9~ - .9~ = 9
9x = 9
x = 1

There was topic after topic about this on the GameFAQs boards, revived mostly by the ones who wanted to argue why .9~ DIDN'T equal 1 without giving any good reasons (by the way, as I explained 536,257,319,954,553.5 times on that board, .0~1 is not a real number, and if it was, it would be equal to zero anyway.)

Comment: Is there starquest buyer's guide available on the web?
I'm willing to buy a pamphlet or CD-ROM. I'm looking at an '89 TSi:
Gold-on-tan (recent respray); three month-old engine rebuild- .020 over,
cast 8:1 pistons, new rod and main bearings, old rod and main bolts and
head studs (read this last one's a no-no), Caravan head (light porting, no
machine work), no balance shafts, bigger IC plastic tubes, bypass valve,
14B (14G?) turbo off 2nd gen. DSM, cone air filter, boost gauge, newish
clutch, new tires, new brake pads, shredded seats, A/C leak, broken
stereo, 155K mi., asking $3,000. Does the engine rebuild seem sound? Would
a compression check tell the story? I'd like to add the optional sport
suspension. I've read the eight-way struts/shocks are still available from
NAPA. What's left- controller, wiring harness, servo motors? Can you still
get these parts new? Others have said forget this option and just get a
set of KYBs. What do you think? Roads are very bad here. If I can find the
optional 16X9 rear wheels, can I move the 16X8s to the front? Thanks for
any light you can shed for a newbie. I'm at work, so please e-mail me at
home.

Comment: I want to know if there is any real proof of the
Armenian/Assyrian/Greek genocide which began in 1915 when the Young Turk
government of the Ottoman Empire began to systematically annihilate
Christian minorities within their empire. Having lost most of my family
members because of their religion, I know that it happened but I want to
know why Turkey still has not recognized it as a genocide, merely saying
that "The Armenians (no mention of Assyrians or Greeks) were threats to
the regime and were plotting to join the invading Russian troops because
they wanted to seek autonomy." Yeah, like women, children, and the elderly
were threats to your fucking shitty-ass oppressive government.

I also hear that if you mention that the Christians were massacred during
WWI in Turkey, you could be looking at jail time from 5-20 years. Since
Turkey is seeking to join the EU and the 90th anniversary of the start of
the massacres are coming up on April 24th, I would like nothing more than
for Turkey to acknowledge, condemn, and apologize for the genocide. Some
EU countries such as France, Italy, and Greece and non-EU countries such
as Russia, Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay recognize the genocide and I
know France is an advocate of the genocide and are calling for Turkey to
acknowledge the killings due to its large Armenian population.

Please, please, please, please, PLEASE look into it. Maybe an article on
snopes.com will get people talking and eventually lead the U.S. government
into officially recognizing the genocide, setting an example for other
countries and eventually a full-fledged investigation on how many really
died and for what reason. It would not only make me happy, but millions of
Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks around the world...
