Comment: Thank you for your wonderful public service. Yours is one of the few
websites I check regularly, and I have told many people about it. Your research
is thorough and well-written--always a pleasure to read. Until I read your FAQ,
I assumed it must be funded and operated by some philanthropic or university
entity. I hope that's a compliment.

Comment: Thank you for providing this service. Oh, if only more people would
check things out PRIOR to spreading them! I attended church last Sunday and
first heard the pastor warn the congregation about Harry Potter, while using
the worn-out urban myth about children converting to Satanism. From there, he
preached his entire sermon on the history of the "12 Days of Christmas" and its
symbolic creation to transfer the Christian faith secretly. I'm doing my best
to find out if the pastor has an email address so I can send him with a link to
your site. Thanks again for debunking these hoaxes.

What? Don't you know that computers are the devil's latest device to drag children into his lair? Or...something similar...

Comment: Thanks for this wonderful site. Now that my brother-in-law is on the
net and forwarding an amazing chunk of known hoaxes, it is incredibly useful to
be able to send him the URL for a detailed well-written explanation of the
hoax. If I work hard, I hope he'll learn to browse this snopes.com himself
before he hits the forward button.

Comment: I would just like to thank you for proving this point. I have dearly
loved the Wizard of Oz for many years now. My fellow employees have been
trying to get me to believe all the nonsense about the dead person hanging from
a tree. I have watched that movie ever since I can remember. I have never
seen a dead person only a bird like you said. I tried to tell them this, but
they wouldn't have it. They told me that one of the guys wives knows everything
about movies. It is obvious to me she doesn't know jack about the Wizard of
Oz. Once again thank you and God bless!

Comment: Even tho I no longer have a child young enough to insist on reading
the Harry Potter series, I've heard and read about the danger a child is placed
in, upon reading that type of material...I'm surprised these same people didn't
raise a ruckus years ago, when I used to read books like "Snow White and the 7
Dwarfs", or "Uncle Remus" (with Brer Rabbit and his briar patch)....Wonder too,
if anyone has ever suggested these so called "parents" sit down and read the
books thier children are reading...I used to do that, and was introduced to
some mighty good readying...Thanks for publishing the true facts...

Comment: I have thouroughly enjoyed reading your site. In a world or virtual
bogusness, you have provided a forum of crisp clear common-sense. There are so
many true tragedies around us, that its hard to stomach people who invent false
ones of people who choose to help "false" causes, i.e. the Saint Bernard
Letter, ect. Thank you for providing what I feel is a vital service in a world
of confusion and misinformation.

Comment: Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU!!!

I just finished 'wasting' over fifteen hours cruising through your wonderful
site. I also spent at least three of that fifteen hours wiping the tears from
my eyes from the laughter your site caused!

Absolutely and without a doubt a 'work of love' by you and any accoladed you
garner from your work are at the very least well deserved!

Comment: God I love this website. I use this site all the time to educate my
peers and associates about being morons and forwarding everything that hits
their inbox.

When they realize what they are doing is destructive they become much more
careful.

Your ability to provide concise explanations with references and timeframes is
a crucial differntiator for your site.

(also your comprehensive search engine for finding related topics and
citations)

Keep up the good work.

Comment: I just wanted to thank you for keeping me from making a fool of myself
on a number of occasions. I am astounded at the number of glurge that passes
my way. I used to be quite naive about what appeared in my in-box and was
guilty of passing some of it along.

For several years now, you have been my #1 source to check out these e-mails
before I pass them along. I have frequently passed on the URL for a particular
item to the person who sent it to me. Some have even thanked me for it,
although only since I have been able to stop sounding so sanctimonious about
it.

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you. Thanks again.

informative pages! You have saved me so much time and 'SPAM' cause I don't send
stuff on until I've checked with you. --- I then get a kick out of directing
the sender to your Reference pages so they can read for themselves the hoax
they are needlessly sending.- I don't know how you can keep up with all of this
but I sure do appreciate your efforts.

90% of the time I'm able to tell them ture or false then provide them with the

Comment: Earlier this week I e-mailed you about a local newspaper columnist who
was reporting the various "six real lawsuits" cases as true and who in reply to
my e-mail had suggested that the hoaxes might be true and the debumkers might
be wrong.

Tonight his column includes this.

"If some of the wacky US legal awards featured recently in this column seemed
too good to be true, there may be a reason.
According to a couple of websites dedicated to debunking urban legends some of
these cases are pure fiction, put about to discredit the US legal system. WHo
knows?"

That's the closest I've ever seen to a retraction in his column and I consider
it a personal victory as well as a victory for snopes.

Comment: I am constantly directing friends and co-workers to your site (among
others) in an attempt to help them verify "Chicken Little" emails before
forwarding them to hundreds of friends and relatives. It's not often that I get
caught by internet misinformation.

I spent the morning wandering around your site (after seeing the recent
broadcast of Bob Eubanks' famous "Whoopee" clip on NBC), and happened upon the
lost legends page. You almost had me with the Mr. Ed story (it can't be, but
there's the proof - it's on the internet), but the Titanic/Poseidon Adventure
story was too hard to swallow. I went directly to the IMDB (not yet having
found your link) and could find no entry for it (obviously!). Then I found your
IMDB link, and well, seemingly there was the proof. The director and cast links
even worked (nice touch). However, none of the actors had a back-link to the
movie entry. I was about to email the IMDB to ask them to update their links.

I reread the stories on this page one last time before doing so, and just
couldn't quite bring myself to believe any of them. Then I found your False
Authority page.
BRAVO! Mr. Ed a zebra - priceless!

Comment: Forget Harry Potter, your site is the work of the devil! I have a
devil of a time leaving it to get work done.

Yeah, that means I absolutely adore it! When I was in college, they subscribed
to American Folklore and I was oft to be found reading the urban legends. How
well do I recall the popular ones (that came up in the movie Urban Legends),
and though I realize these are just stories, I still won't look into a mirror
with the lights out (let alone chant "Bloody Mary").

Now to go waste more time.....

Comment: I cannot believe that people would come up with so much garbage!
What about the families of the people that were murdered? What a grave
injustice that is being done to them.

So what... this whole thing was a plot??? Our own government bombed the
Pentegon? Did they blow up the Towers too? Oh, wait... the towers must
have been alien aircraft that simply returned to the mothership and the
Aliens controlling the world used the bombings as a coverup. This makes
more sense than the bizarre theory of a conspiracy on the Pentegon!

I am furious! How dare the french... who have necer been friendly to
Americans, insinuate that our leaders would do or devise such a scheme.
What is this, X-Files? Don't these ignorant nut jobs have anything better
to do with their time than to degridate the memory of the thousands of
Americans who were MURDERED by ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS on OUR OWN SOIL with AIRPLANES?????

Anyway, I wanted to thank you for your time and energy into this website
to show these feeble minded, inbred jackals how ridiculous they sound and
look!

Comment: I just came from http://www.snopes2.com/lost/false.htm via
http://www.snopes2.com/lost/mistered.asp, and I wanted to say thank you.
My first reaction on reading that Mr. Ed was a zebra was to think
"Whaaaaat?", but I confess that as I read I did try to think of ways it
might be possible.

Fortunately, I failed, and had utterly rejected the idea before getting to
the hilarious bit about the referees in striped shirts.

I'm sending the link to the Mister Ed article to several people without
commentary. I confess that I'm dismayed to think that my mother will
probably believe it.

Thank you again.

so cool! I'm glad that you've got those pages on your site, and I hope it
gets a few more people to think for themselves. And, besides, that's a
pretty funny page. My favorite is the button to switch back and forth from
seeing the picture of the zebra "in color" and "in black and white".
Pretty cool.

Keep up the good work!

Comment: I found your lost legends page to be very intresting. At first I
only glanced at several legends such as the KFC story and the one about
Blackbeard using "Sing a Song of Sixpence" to recuit pirates. They seemed
believable enough, and after all you guys do go through a lot of research
to seperate fact from fiction......

It wasn't until I read the articles on Mr.Ed and the one about Missouri
getting rid of fractions that I saw something fishy was going on. I knew
that a black and white zebra was always black and white, and that senators
couldn't be that stupid (actually most of them are that stupid) to get rid
of fractions and then possibly get rid of verbs.

I then saw the last article which appeared to be out of place of the Lost
Legends page. Reading it, I relized that I had been had and embarressed
because I told the KFC story as fact to my friends. Next time I'll be
more carefull, use common sense, and double check my information.

fight back against the morons, the pests, the sense of humour by-pass

obviously false stories, fake pictures and annoying chain emails. I

don't want their silly stories. Congratulations for striking a blow in

Comment: My comment is on the diet add with a post-it note attached story.
In 1997, my mother (who was overweight at the time) received the Berry
Trim ad in the mail. The initial it was signed with was "S" and the
postmark city was Bakersfield. At the time, my mom's sister, Sue lived in
Bakersfield, California, and the two had gotten back in touch with each
other (after two years of no contact) about a week before the ad arrived.
My mother assumed the ad was from Sue and as a result she hadn't been in
touch with her until I found the story on your site. My mom immediately
called her, and they are chatting and crying to each other as I type this!
So, I guess, thanks, for reuniting my mom and her sister!

Comment: I know you get much praise for your Web site, but I just had to
tell you about my friend, who is 75 years old. For the past two years, she
has been sending all sorts of horror stories to me by e-mail, plenty
aghast at their truthfulness. I follow your site very closely, and I
invariably tell her to look at www.snopes.com/xxx. After a while, she
commented in wonder at my being up to date on everything. In the past few
months, her warning e-mails stopped coming, and I wondered if the global
rumor mill was grinding to a close due to your informative site. This
morning, though, a mutual friend, who is 80, forwarded me a horror story
about roach eggs on envelope flaps that she had received from our
75-year-old friend, who had not sent the story to me. I immediately
searched for "roach eggs" on your site, and there it was, untrue, of
course. I was again able to tell the 75-year-old to look at
www.snopes.com/xxx. I took the long way around, but I was able to fox her
yet again. I love your site. Aren't we humans a gullible lot?

Comment: Thank you so much for this site. My son got a stupid hoax email
that he, at 12, knew was not true. He showed it to me and I was appaled
to see that the original recipients of this drivel were government
employees (there emails being present in the forwarded message). How
could grown ups not know this was a lie, asked my son?
We sent the page relating the falacy of the email to all who had received
it before it got to my son. I love that at the bottom of the page it
actually pointed out the harm in passing on eroneus, inflamitory nonsense.
The email, by the way, was regarding the origin of the work picnic. If a
12 year old can figure out that it is bunk, why can't an adult engage
brain before clicking forward?

I think I love this person enough to want to buy them a spell-checker.
