Comment: I don't know if this is anything or not. I forwarded an email about the
"jury duty scam" and a Norton dialog pops up saying someone is requesting
*********** info and to block it which I did. Is this a new twist to that
email?

I've had good results using Wite-Out, though your results may vary.

Please let us know what works best for you, as none of us want to be reminded of Snopes' plans to take over our computers.

Comment: I right-clicked, trying to put a shortcut for your site on my desktop and
instead I ended up with a long white and green swoopy rectangle at the
upper right hand side of my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it and it
isn't an active icon. It just sits there. It looks like your swoop at
the top of this page. Can you help me? I think it has something to do
with working off line, but I'm not sure... I did finally get the desktop
shortcut. Help!!!

Comment: Back during the Great Depression hobos going door to door for handouts
would occassionally find a generous person who fed them and gave them used
clothing or blankets. The hobo would leave a mark above the door of such
places, usually is chalk or coal, identifying this place to other hobos as
a soft touch.

It looks like my computer door has been so marked; that I have become a
ready target for the malicious hobos who prowel the internet. I am being
innundated by pop ups offering me protection from spyware and virus threats
I had never heard of. They declare I am infected and that I should go to
their web site and download a program that will protect me - for a fee (for
a while).

Simultaneously I am being hit by porno pop ups as well and one of these
so-called threat eliminators asking if I was being hit by porno popups, or
if my computer was running slower, or if some of my apps were not working
properly - all YES, yet there was not a problem until these offers to help
began showing up.

I have run Norton Virus scan and it found a couple of threats. Why should
I need any other form of protection but Norton. Has some new type of
threat appeared that Norton does not address? How can I stop these
annoying pop ups and their attendant threats?

I have tried to contact Norton but to no avail. They just have a series of
canned inputs and responses but no way to discuss a particular problem with
them. I realize this is a little out of your line, but can you folks help?

I think they saw that Simpsons epsiode with Kirk Douglas one too many times.

Krusty: I gave you blintzes to paint my fence, and you never did!
Hobo: Those blintzes were terrible!
Krusty: Paint my fence!
Hobo: Make me!
(Gets into a fist fight in court)

ETA: Actually, it was another episode where they see the marks left by hobos on a fence. I'm mixing up my Simpsons hobo episodes. D'oh!

Comment: I have a this 'popcorn' site that came onto my computer with a
video of sorts of a woman welcomeing me to their site. I did not join
their site. There are NO options to get rid of this only to click
continue' to get rid of this popup'. I used xoftspySE Setup... to try to
get rid of it and it worked. Now...is xoftspySE Setup legit or will it
steal all my passwords and bank information. I swear I can't trust anyone
any more. The spyware site I used says it is free but now I see this may
be trial. Who to beleive? Is there somewhere one can go to check out
these offers to see if the are legitimate?

WTF are these morons doing? The only thing I can possibly think of that would get them a larger Snopes icon on their desktop is right-clicking the logo and setting as wallpaper. But even then, that's the entire desktop, and they seem to be suggesting they get a larger icon, not a whole-screen image.

It bothers me that this obviously happens to more than one poor technologically illiterate soul, but that I can't even work out what it is they're doing.

OK, I figured it out. I'm using Windows 2000, but I'm sure this would be the same for XP. If you go to the main page and right-click on the header, one of the options is "set as desktop item".

What it does is enable your Active Desktop, and put the picture "snopes_02.gif" on your active desktop. On mine, it took up half the screen and was partially off the screen.

They can obviously disable by unchecking the "snopes_02.gif" listing in the Active Desktop menu, but I think that's asking too much.

I believe they think that "set as desktop item" is the same as "Send to desktop (create shortcut)", but they're actually just dropping the picture, not creating a shortcut at all.

Thanks, that's probably it. On my XP I only have set as background. Not sure if XP even has the 'active desktop'.
