I don't know if this would work, but is there a way to make it so you could search the entire forum instead of one section (such as "Automobiles" etc? A lot of people, it seems, have trouble finding things in the forums. Not to mention, it is a big pain in the arse to try and figure out exactly what section the post you are looking for is in. Is this possible? Is there a way to do it already and I just don't know?

Yes and no. No, the board does not allow comprehensive searches (I can't recall the reason). On the other hand, someone (who's name eludes me but who's greatness is all encompassing ) wrote a search plugin for firefox that uses google to search the entire board, at least all of the board that's been indexed thus far (I think there might be a few hours to a day lag between new posts and being indexed on google).

We used to have this ability, but as the board became bigger and bigger it tied up the resources too much, which resulted in a very slow search and a slow board for everyone surfing it. I once had a search of the whole board take up to 20 or 30 minutes.
You can find threads via www.google.com however, if you specify to search this site only [ETA: what Elbe said on that]

This will find almost anything on the messageboards. Using site:snopes.com instead of site:msgboard.snopes.com will widen the search to include the main pages as well.
ETA: If you have the Google toolbar, it comes equipped with a drop-down menu which does all this for you.

Thanks for all your helpful replies! I didn't know how everyone kept up with all the chow-ing that goes on around here.
