I noticed that the new theme uses 64x48 as the default pixel size, and that existing avatars are resized to these new dimensions. This, unfortuately, messes up the aspect ratio of many people's custom avatars.
Is there a way to set up the board so that custom avatars are not resized as long as they stay within a certain maximum size (eg, max width=48 and max height=80, for example) ?

No. The only options are to specify a fixed size or turn off resizing completely, and the latter isn't a viable choice because too many posters are using huge images as their avatars.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say it's a bug. Am I right? Do I get a prize?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say it's a cropped image of the cover of a book called Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear. Of course it could be that I remember when Bug had the uncropped image for his avatar.

Well, I needed a name, and I still have one of the earlier editions somewhere around here
ETA : yup, 1996. I think the book may even be older then that.
It'd have been nice if the avatar resizing systm was a bit more versatile, but you can't have it all...

Why not resize the avatar? Just leave the extra space transparent.

Would you like to explain to dozens of users how to add transparent areas to their avatars ?
(And if you're talking about 24-bit PNG's, those don't show properly in IE. What method do you use ?)

Hmm, adding transparant areas to images... It's easy enough with something like photoshop, but I don't think all that many people have a copy. It might be possible in paint, though, I've never looked before.
You know, Bug, that new version looks better than any of your old versions.

Was that always your avatar, Bug? If so, I've only just "seen" it now. I also only recently realized Jackie in the Elevator's avatar is two dogs- I honestly always saw it as deer with its back arched.
I have to change my avatar for the new theme- I swear I don't have an unusually long face!

Paint.net can add transparency, and it's free, but considering that many people don't even know how to resize an image - understandable, since you don't really need that skill unless you're into image editing - I'd expect to run into a few problems getting it explained.
Maybe a step-by-step guide on Elbe's page ? I'd be willing to help.

For using paint.net? I've never even heard of it. I was once considering making a step-by-step guide to image cropping and resizing in paint, but it's such a long process I never got around to it.
I really should update my pages, I'm so behind anymore.

Just a general FAQ on how to resize an image (I suppose the procedure's similar for most image editing software).

Probably digging up an old thread, but why not just increase the size of avatar allowed to something like 100x100 pixels. It's not too large, I don't think.
