Valentine's day about 5 years ago, my sweetie and I had our traditional Dinner-At-A-Fine-Restaurant. Came time to exchange gifts. I gave him a nice silk shirt and a package of Gummy Butts.

(He gave me a diamond engagement ring, and proposed.)

Penis and boob shaped pasta
Penis and boob shaped sweets
Penis shaped after dinner mints
Chocolate Milk in a penis shape bottle
and ofcourse eddible undies, but made out of sweets (like the necklaces I use to buy when I was a kid)
Some companies even have handcuffs and whips made out of sweets! [Eek!]

For Pride every year in Toronto, our organization makes chocolate boobs, penises and naked ladies. They are always a hit and all the proceeds go to the ferrets.

Though in context, they aren't so politically incorrect. I don't even want to count how many submissive naked gay men I've seen [Big Grin]

My sister got some "Dick-tacs" mints at an adult shop-- penis-shaped mints. My mom went to an "adult-themed" birthday party one time and brought home (just to embarrass us) a white-chocolate penis.

I know veal isn't considered PC by some people.
What about caviar? Didn't I hear somewhere that the sturgeon were endangered?

Caviar...Not so much I don't think. I can't be sure, but I think you'd mostly find people who just think it is nasty.

Veal, definatly. Although to me, it's just like, eat the cow now or later, it's not like it makes an amazing difference. They only live like 2 years till they are slaughtered anyhow. I still wouldn't eat veal because it doesn't do anything for me.

Sturgeon are indeed endangered, and caviar is not a sustainable foodstuff, though it is so profitable that these animals are slaughtered, bringing beluga populations down to 10% - most of this trade is illegal.

In the case of veal, it's not that they die young, it's that they live a life worse than death, namely in veal crates. Designed to prevent movement (exercise), the crate does its job of atrophying the calves' muscles, thus producing tender veal. The animals can't move, are fed crap to stop muscle development, never see the sun, or their mother, or the grass, and die in torment licking the urine soaked bars of the crate desperate for metallic elements.

I don't really get it. What kid DOESN'T squeeze their watergun directly into their mouths? It's like one of the main things you do with waterguns. Sometimes moms would even be nice enough to put juice into them for us. It just isn't the big deal that gun hysteria has made it into. Not a shred of evidence to show that waterguns or juice guns have anything whatever to do with real violence. Then again I guess people think kids really are that stupid.

Actually, I *did* know that about veal, how the calves lead such miserable, short existences. [Frown] Frankly, I don't eat it, myself. I'm also a little uncomfortable with the idea of eating lamb. (I don't eat that, either.) I guess it's the whole baby thing.

Somewhat off-topic, I had a funny time explaining to my neighbor that when you eat meat, you're eating the muscle of the animal. "I thought it was just, like, you know, chicken." Well you have to be eating some part of the animal! What part did she *think* she was eating??

I was also told by a prof that many of the chicken eggs sold in grocery stores are fertilized. I wonder how much truth there is to that one? It seems like it'd be easy to prevent; just keep the rooster away! [Big Grin]

Think I'll go have a nice, juicy, apple... [Smile]

Some grocery stores may get their eggs from breeder farms, and these eggs can be incubated, even if they've spent time in the fridge - but by and large, supermarkets get their eggs from rooster free sources, and hence none of these will be fertilized.

So basically, it would be best to avoid eating caviar for the rest of my life? Can't these creatures be farmed or something? How could I encourage farming of such creatures? If I wanted fish eggs, what sources should I use instead?

Do you have any evidence that this is happening? What are your sources for this? Are there any veal sources that aren't grown in such a manner?

Whitefish. Made in the US and there are some who claim that you can't tell the difference.
Of course there are other who claim that it is a pale imitation, but I don't eat either, so it doesn't matter to me. [Big Grin]

There are plenty of sources out there for sustainable caviar, such as tsarnicoulai below. As for the treatment of veal calfs, I have supplied a couple of links, and they might be regarded as upsetting…

Veal crates are illegal in the UK but not on the continent (don't know about USA, but from my poor attempts at searching the ASPCA's website it seems it's not illegal there either) - but most of the veal eaten in the UK comes from the continent anyway.

Fertile eggs fall into the category of things that people buy because of marketing, not facts.
Usually twice the cost of regular eggs, The American egg Board says "FERTILE EGGS are
Eggs which can be incubated and developed into chicks. Fertile eggs are not more nutritious than nonfertile eggs, do not keep as well as nonfertile eggs and are more expensive to produce. Fertile eggs may contain a small amount of male hormone, but there are no known advantages."

It has been pretty widely publicized.

If you know where to get it, there is such a thing as 'free range' veal, but it is fairly rare and very expensive.

My mother told me that when she was a kid veal was a very cheap meat, something that one would buy if one couldn't afford any other kind of meat.

I have no clue what these are called...but it's basically a a long tube, and on top of the tube is a cylinder shaped lollypop with a rounded end and a hole at the tip.

What you do is squeeze the tube, and goo comes out of the tip, and you lick it off while sucking on the lollypop.

I'll leave it up to you to make your own assumptions.

On the subject of caviar, not all "fish eggs" you can buy come from sturgeon. Caviar from sturgeon is small black eggs, but for example there is also (IMO much better tasting) caviar that is large (about .5 cm across) red eggs, although I don't know what sort of fish it comes from.

I think those may be salmon eggs. My mom gets those when we go for sushi.
