I've heard a rumour going around and pretty much all my friends have heard it, the Dr Pepper can make you sterile. Could this be true?

The FDA would have really dropped the ball on that one, wouldn't they have?

I can see it now... cut to the back seat of some high school fottball jock's car:

"Don't worry, baby, I don't need to wear one of those... I drank a whole six pack of Dr. Pepper last night!"

When I was a teen, the rumour was that Coca Cola made you sterile. Then it was Polo Mints made you sterile. Then the story went that if you ate 6 packets of Polo mints and drank Coca Cola you'd end up sterile. A few years later it was Diet Pepsi that supposedly made you sterile. A few years later still a discontinued brand of soft drink had supposedly been banned because it made you sterile if you drank too much.

These rumours just keep going around ....

My 3 children can attest to the fact that Dr Pepper in no way causes sterility.

Comment: One of my coworkers recently commented on my choice of soda by informing
me that Diet Dr. Pepper has been shown to cause "penile atrophy". At
first, I thought it was just a joke, but he seemed pretty convinced. When
I searched the internet, I found plenty of information regarding Diet Dr.
Pepper, and some information on "penile atrophy" but nothing connecting
the two.

Mountain Dew makes you sterile, meat makes you sterile, soy makes you sterile, caffeine makes you sterile, you wouldn't believe how many things "make you sterile". It's utter insanity. I can't say definitively whether or not these things actually DO make you sterile, but I know that the FDA or Canadian Food and Drug Association (CFDA) monitors what is a legal "food product" and what can go into food. What is it exactly that causes this so-called sterility? And if it were true, I would think that vegetarians who eat soy, meat-eaters (so that's almost everyone right there), Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew lovers, coffee drinkers, and pretty much the entire population would soon become sterile. The population does not seem to be getting any smaller...

If your afraid that foods and drinks are going to take away your child birthing practices, then don't bother.

If you really want to do it, your better off telling your doctor you want to lose it and he can offer to snip your nuts off or whatever.

I wonder if these myths are extrapolations of studies that say something like caffeine reduces sperm counts or has been found to decrease implantation. I have seen studies along these lines though I don't have time to search today.

Caffeine can affect fertility. In a couple with other fertilty issues the consumption of a particular brand of soda might be what makes the difference for them.

How ironic would that be if there were a urologist named Dr. Pepper who performs vasectomies. Then, techically, Dr. Pepper would make you sterile...

What's more ironic is that the board isn't filtered against children staring at this board by chance.

History of Dr. Pepper

quote:

Dr Pepper is a “native Texan,” originating at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store. It is the oldest of the major brand soft drinks in America. Like its flavor, the origin of Dr Pepper is out-of-the-ordinary. Charles Alderton, a young pharmacist working at Morrison's store, is believed to be the inventor of the now famous drink. Alderton spent most of his time mixing up medicine for the people of Waco, but in his spare time he liked to serve carbonated drinks at the soda fountain. He liked the way the drug store smelled, with all of the fruit syrup flavor smells mixing together in the air. He decided to to create a drink that tasted like that smell. He kept a journal, and after numerous experiments he finally hit upon a mixture of fruit syrups that he liked. ...
