Seems to be one of the real differences between men and women: more men than women feel such a desperate need for sex that they'd buy it.
As a friend of mine (a woman) said, Women have figured out something that men haven't yet: no one *needs* sex.
I don't know how much of it is biological instinct and how much is social conditioning: in a world where women were dominant in all phases of society, would they hire men as prostitutes? I *think* they would not, but I have no way to be sure... My sense of the matter is that it is an actual physiological difference in instinctive behavior (explained nicely by sociobiology.)
But, of course, part of the joy of civilization is saying "ptui" to our biological instincts. (e.g., scary thrill rides at amusement parks!)

How long ago? The statutes I can find tend to be quite gender neutral. In Massachusetts, for instance (MGL Chapter 272):
quote:Section 53A. Any person who engages, agrees to engage, or offers to engage in sexual conduct with another person in return for a fee, or any person who pays, agrees to pay or offers to pay another person to engage in sexual conduct, or to agree to engage in sexual conduct with another natural person may be punished by imprisonment in a jail or house of correction for not more than one year, or by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars, or by both such fine and imprisonment."
Our General Laws have been around for quite a while, and that seems pretty gender-neutral to me, saying "any person" and not "any woman."
Never mind. It's a munchkin for me. YMMV.

I have just discovered this board and have caught up reading all the posts. There is some misinformation about condoms which I feel the need to clear up.
Condoms are very good for the protection against sexually transmitted diseases that are passed in body fluids such as gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV. For viruses which can live on the skin they offer only fair protection. I have seen many patients who had herpes in the pubic area and because they went away within a few days of treatment, they always thought they were just infected hair follicles. When the woman has HPV it is on the cervix, the vagina and external labia (i.e. the entire genital tract). Therefore, with each thrust of the penis, the base of the penis and the testicles come in contact with the infected area. But since 70% of young adults are positive HPV anyway, this may be a mute point.

And please forgive me for my misguided attempt at "wit."

I don't suppose you have a site for this, do you? Seems awfully high.
And Welcome!

HPV and Cervical Cancer In the United States... Genital HPV is an extremely common viral infection. (Of the more than 100 known HPV strains, 30 are sexually transmissible and are considered genital HPV.) Approximately 5.5 million new genital HPV transmissions occur in this country every year, representing about one-third of all new STD infections, and an estimated 20 million men and women are thought to have genital HPV at any given time. According to a 1997 American Journal of Medicine article, nearly three in four Americans between the ages of 15 and 49 have been infected with genital HPV at some point in their life.
