I thought this was pretty interesting -

"According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers coach Mike Nolan recently petitioned the NFL to allow him to wear a suit on the sidelines during games ... and was turned down."

Wonder if he would wear a fedora with it...

Yeah, it would be totally inappropriate for him to look like this.

That's an excellent illustration with what's wrong with this situation. Maybe it's just me, but for all that the NFL does right there's quite a bit of this stupid nonsense that they do wrong imho. I find it sickening that guys get fined what they do for "uniform violations" for example. That's the price they pay (literally) to play the game though I guess.

What if he wore a suit adorned with Nike logos every few inches, like the "official" licensed team apparel?

Actually, it's a deal with Reebok that has with the NFL. According to this article, Reebok may be willing to work it out.

What kind of a sick mind wants to traipse up and down the sideline for three hours in a suit? Nolan should be worrying more about how badly he's going to fail his first year than fashion.

I think it's been proven that one of, if not the greatest coach in NFL history wore a suit on the sidelines.

I think they should let him, heck NHL coaches all wear suits on the bench. I mean seriously whats the big deal, if it's just a sponsorship thing, it's not that hard to sew a logo onto a suit jacket.
