I know that the Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey is located off of exit 16W from the turnpike. My question is, was that exit renamed because of the complex or is it a coincidence?
(For those non-fans, a Hockey or Basketball team needs 16 Wins in the playoffs to win their respective championship)

Doesn't the exit number correspond to the mileage marker on the affected roadway? (Though I know that the Maine turnpike used to be numbered simply sequentially, so that, for example, between exits 9 and 10, there could pass 50 miles.)

No, exits on the New Jersey Turnpike (and an astonishing number of other Eastern Seaboard Interstates) are completely uncivilized and are numbered sequentially--not based on mileage.
Exit 16W is the 16th exit from the Delaware border and it exits onto a Westbound roadway. (16E goes East.)

But the Devils and the Nets play at Continental Airlines Arena. (maybe its near the Meadowlands, I don't know)
The Jets and Giants play at the Meadowlands and 16 wins is a perfect season.

I think its all coincidence.
No, the Jets and Giants play at Giants Stadium, a part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Continental Airlines Arena is also part of the complex.

Cool thanks. I always had heard of it referred to as the Meadowlands, and thought Giants Stadium was just an alternate name.

And for those that don't know. The Meadowlands Sports Complex Consists of 3 areas.
1. Giants Stadium: Where the Giants (Football), Jets (Football), and MetroStars (Soccer) play. They also run Concerts every so often if the act is large enough.
2. Continential Airlines Arena: Home to The NJ Nets (Basketball), NJ Devils (Hockey), Seaton Hall Pirates (College Basketball), and various Concerts and shows (Ice Capades and whatnot)
3. Meadowlans Rack Track: 1 mile Horse Race track used for Harness Racing.

Nah, it refers to the fact that Jimmy Hoffa was shot with 16 different Walther PPKs before his body was dumped in the cement underneath the Meadowlands complex.
Seriously, I'm fairly certain that the NJ Turnpike predates both the current basketball and hockey playoff formats, especially since the NBA had a best-of-five first round series until a couple years ago. I think it even predates the 16-game NFL season. So I would definitely go with coincidence.
