Comment: Is it likely that driving a nail in a tree will kill it?

More specifically is it likely that driving a copper nail in a tree will
kill it?

Iíve just come from a forum where several people believe both of these
things. More believe the copper nail idea.

Hint: I donít think either is true. But, it seems like Iím wrong a lot.

Well, I have an apple and a pine tree out back with screw eyes in them. Haven't died yet.

While copper can be detrimental to plants, I doubt a single nail will kill a tree.

Lots of nails might, but it would probably be easier to just chop it down.

I don't know about copper nails but many of my parents bird feeders/houses and bat and butterfly boxes/houses are nailed to trees and the trees seem just fine.

There's an oak tree, with a 6-inch trunk, out on the ranch where I grew up. When it (and I!) was younger, I used to shoot at it with a .22. That tree has at least 20 bullets in it, but has continued to grow.

(I don't recommend such foolishness; I was young and stupid.)
