Our local free daily newspaper includes a quotation in each issue. Today's was the following, attributed to Albert Einstein:

"When you consider that the universe is something expanding infinitely into nothing, it becomes very easy to consider wearing plaids and stripes together."

Google brings up this questionable site and has this messge board thread cached with the following longer version of the quotation:

"When you consider that the universe is something made mostly of nothing, which is still something, and it is expanding infinitely into nothing (which does not exist) it becomes very easy to consider wearing plaids and stripes together."

Veracity, anyone?

It's not in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, but I wouldn't really expect it to be even if he had said it - it's too flippant for them, really.

It doesn't sound like something Einstein would say - the most common "Einstein fashion" story is about how he had seven identical suits of clothes so that he could wear one each day and not worry about what to put on every morning. (Very sensible policy!) I don't think that outfit included plaid and stripes.

Most of the other quotes from him on that site look rubbish, too. Especially the one about the hot stove and the pretty girl - if Einstein was going to try to sum up the Theory of Relativity in those sort of terms, I'd have hoped he'd actually get it right...

Since I have the hot stove quote in my sig, I had to double check.
It is listed here.

edited: I did change my sig to reflect the exact wording from the link [Big Grin]

but his explanation of radio is priceless:

quote:
You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat.

My favorite Einstein quote (haven't checked the veracity): "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits."

Since some people claim Einstein had Asperger's Syndrome, and that AS are notorious with "peer pressure", maybe Einstein was a fashion disaster.
