I figured if any board could help, it would be this one. Can anyone remember from where this phase comes:

"Lord, what fools these mortals be."

It's driving me nuts. And my memory for these sorts of things is horrible. Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe that's Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Spoken by Puck, who is an elf or a fairy or somethin'.

A Midsummer Night's Dream
Act 3, Scene 2
quote:
PUCK
Captain of our fairy band,
Helena is here at hand;
And the youth, mistook by me,
Pleading for a lover's fee.
Shall we their fond pageant see?
Lord, what fools these mortals be!

And then there's the parody, spoken over a buffet lunch: Lord, what foods these morsels be!

This appears in Joy of Cooking by Rombauer & Becker in reference to sweetbreads.
