I thought that was the point -- Once you've eliminated everyhting you THOUGHT was possible, then something you thought was IMpossible must be the answer.

I generally list this as my favorite quote:

"Ain't no sense worrying about things you got control over, because if you got control over them, ain't no sense worrying. And there ain't no sense worrying about things you got no control over either, because if you got no control them, ain't no sense worrying."
-- Mickey Rivers, former baseball player

However, given this thread, I'll have to go with:

"I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."

If you want to score big points in an argument, just smile, and say, with an air of extreme profundity:

"Yes, but you can't tell which way a train went by looking at the tracks."

There is no counter-argument to this, since it is undoubtably true, yet it would show a lack of intelligence to reveal that one has not grasped its relevance to the topic at hand.

What you said here reminds me of one of my all time favorites.

"WHoever knows he is deep strives for clarity; whoever would like to appear deep to the crowd, strives for obscurity. For the crowd considers anything deep if only it cannot see the bottom. The crowd is so timid and afraid of going into the water." -Nietzsche

After reading this, I made the decision to always ask for a clarification, however much I was afraid of looking stupid. Generally, those who willingly clarify themselves, don't put an ounce of effort into making me look stupid. Those who don't really clarify themselves but instead imply that I'm an idiot, I suddenly see for the idiots they are. If you know that what you say is true, you'll be flattered by the interest. If you are blowing smoke, you will react defensively. This quote gave me the perfect scalpel for separating the wise from the fools. Of course, I'm not talking about arguments here, in an argument, demanding clarification can be a pretty offensive tactic. You can tree a person by just acting like nothing they say makes any sense to you. My ex used to do that to me all the time.

Another gem from him, Freddy, not my ex:

Those thinkers in whom all stars move in cyclic orbits are not the most profound: whoever looks into himself as into a vast space and carries galaxies in himself knows how irregular all galaxies are; they lead into the chaos and labyrinth of existence.

I originally posted this on another old thread about best quotes of all time:

1. "Who the h*** wants to hear actors talk?" -- H.M. Warner, Warner Brothers, 1927
2. "So we went to Atari and said, 'Hey, we've got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we'll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we'll come work for you.' And they said, 'No.' So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, 'Hey, we don't need you. You haven't got through college yet.'" -- Apple Computer Inc. founder Steve Jobs on attempts to get Atari and H-P interested in his and Steve Wozniak's personal computer.

3. Truth never hurts the teller. -- Robert Browning

4. "When I was in England I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn't like it. I didn't inhale." - Bill Clinton

5. "I'm having a friend for dinner" Guess who???

6. "I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?" Dirty Harry

And the greatest quote of ALL time:

Sue Hawk (of the Survivor game show fame)-

I don't have any questions to ask, only statements. This island has nothing but snakes and rats. And here we have Rich, the snake, and Kelly, who turned into a rat.

(To Rich) "Your inability to admit your shortcomings makes you a loser."

(To Kelly): "You got stomped on, on national TV. You are very two faced and manipulative. If I ever pass you again in life, and you were dying of thirst, I would not give you a drink of water. I'd leave you for the vultures."

To the above I also add the following:

-Arnold Schwarzenneger, Commando: "Wait that's right Matrix, you said you were going to kill me last right?
I lied."

-The Godfather: i'll make an offer you can't refuse

-May the force be with you, always

Ooh, wait, chinpira, I think you got the Schwarzenegger quote wrong. I think the dialogue went like this:

Ahnaud (holding bad guy over cliff by one leg): Hey, Sully, remember how I said I'd kill you last?

Sully: That's right, you did!

Ahnaud: I lied.

Sully: "AAAAAA-A-A--A--a--a---a---aaaaa... THUD"

A few minutes later, the flight attendant Ahnaud has roped in to help him asks, "Where's Sully?"

He replies, "I let him go."

I got to thinking about sin, or badness, or whatever you want to call it, and I realized that just as there are a limited number of consumer electronics we create as a species, there are also a limited number of sins we can commit, too.
