I thought of this story while reading the Churchill posts. My religion teacher (i go to a jesuit school) told this story to us one day.
George Bernard Shaw was at a large banquet , talking with a group of friends as they were drinking their after dinner coffee. The topic turned to the old 'what would you do for [insert large amount of money]' His friend turned to the pretty young woman sitting next to him and said
"Would you sleep with me for a thousand pounds?" She just smiled and said
"I rather think I would" Shaw then asked if she would sleep with him for twenty pounds.
"of course not! What do you think i am?"She replied angrily, to which he retorted
"We already know what you are, we're just haggling over a price now."

That's been attributed to a variety of people. It's probably originated simply as a joke, but, for some reason, people prefer it if jokes are purported to be true stories.
