The only reason I am skeptical is that Lincoln's usual private term for blacks was "niggers." He was a great man, but very much a product of his time.

Where did you see this? In every letter I have ever read regarding Lincoln and the blacks, he refers to blacks as "negros" or "coloreds" which were considered the polite terms in those days.

And yes, he was a product of his time, but he did recognize slavery as a great evil and while he would have let it die in the South of its own accord, he did wish to see it end.
