I could have sworn that we used to have an option to receive email from members, but not have our email addresses displayed. I'm sure that I've sent messages to other members using this option and entered text into a text box. There was a notice that the other user had chosen to keep their email address private, and that if I used this feature, the other user would be able to see my email address.

Now I see in the Profile editing screen that there is only an option to have one's email visible or not, and non-members have the ability to see and contact us by email.

Have I misremembered this? If not, is there any way to get the feature restored so that members can receive email without having their address visible to every stranger who surfs through the board?

No, you've not "misremembered" it - the FAQ still refers to it, although the option seems to have disappeared in the profile.

How can users get in touch with me if I hide my e-mail address?

If you would prefer that your e-mail address not be publicly available, but you want users to be able to mail you through this message board, edit your profile and select the "No, but allow members to mail me through the board" preference.

Thanks, Roadie. I thought so. I wonder if the software changed or if snopes changed his setup.

It's pretty creepy to receive email from someone when you thought your address was protected.

For anyone interested there are now three options again. Mail, with address visible; mail, with address hidden; and no mail.

Thanks, snopes!

S&C, I thought I'd posted this earlier but I guess not:

After you originally started this thread, I checked my profile and saw that my email options, which I had originally set to "keep hidden but allow members to mail me through the board" had been changed to "allow everyone to view my address and send me email." I had not authorized a change in these settings.

But it explains why I had gotten creepy emails from strangers regarding things I'd written here on the boards. I immediately changed my settings back to the ones I'd originally chosen. Now my email address should be hidden and only members should be able to contact me.

I don't know why or when those settings were changed.

I just saw this thread today, and I just looked at my profile. Oddly enough, I had had mine set to "keep hidden but allow members to mail me through the board", but it had changed to "do not allow anyone to email me." I just changed it back. I wonder if it got reset to the default after the board software upgrase fiasco?

I just checked mine, and it was set to "hide my address and do not allow members to mail me". I've changed it back to "allow members to mail me through this board" again now.

It's strange that the glitch is changing different profiles in different ways.

Mine got changed too.. in the same manner as WildaBeast and Em's. I changed it back to allow members to mail me. Glad I saw this post.. I wouldn't have ever noticed that!
