There's a common rumor, one I've heard mentioned at least twice on CSI: Las Vegas, that after the MGM Grand Hotel fire that some of the 84 people who perished in the fire were found "fused" to their slot machines, having refused to leave their machines even as the building burned around them.
Any truth to this?

No...There were 87 total deaths, most on the upper floors and in stairwells were people died of smoke inhalation.
Incidentally, the MGM that everyone knows today is not the same hotel...the one that was involved in the fire was subsequently repaired, sold and reopened as Bally's Las Vegas, and the present MGM Grand was opened about a mile and a half away.
