Many residents of North and South Carolina still remember Hurricane Hugo, the class 4 storm that devestated Charleston and cut a path into Charlotte, killing 56 and becoming the second most damaging hurricane ever to hit the US.
Recently a buddy of mine from back home claimed the Tim Duncun had originally wanted to pursue a career as a professional swimmer, but lived in one of the communities hit by Hugo. According to my friend the swimming pool that Duncun used was destroyed by the storm, and Duncun switched to basketball to pass the time until it could be repaired, only to discover both a love for the game and a suprising amount of talent.

From his nba.com bio :
quote: Didnít play organized basketball until ninth grade, concentrated on swimming as a youngster - at one point was a top U.S. competitor in his age group in the 400 freestyle - before his local pool was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989
