Comment: In 1982, I was a sophomore at Campbell University in eastern North
Carolina. Campbell was affiliated with the Baptist Church. I was told
that the Anheuser-Busch brewing company had offered to pay for the
construction of a new athletic center for the school. The centerpiece of
the athletic center was to be an olympic size swimming pool. The only
condition Anheuser-Busch made to the school was that their corporate logo
had to be painted prominently on the bottom of the pool as a permanent
advertisement. The administrators at Campbell University refused to allow
an advertisement for a beer company to appear on their campus and
Anheuser-Busch withdrew the offer to finance the athletic center.

About six months after hearing this story at Campbell University, I had
transferred to Wake Forest University in western North Carolina. Wake
Forest is also affiliated with the Baptist Church. I heard this exact
same story as being offered to Wake Forest. The only difference was that
Anheuser-Busch wanted the Budweiser logo painted on the swimming pool
bottom. Because of this condition, Wake Forest declined the offer.

Hearing almost the exact same stories at two different schools caused me
to question the validity of this rumor. I’m sure it must have made the
rounds at other colleges.

Wait a minute! Are you telling me that there are colleges that don't have a Budweiser logo painted on the bottom of their swimming pools?

When I was attending Christian college, the Coors Foundation wanted to donate a lot of money toward a project of some kind. As far as I knew, there were no advertising stipulations (it was Coors Foundation, not the actual Coors Beer company). The college refused the grant simply because of Coors' association with alcohol (a -gasp- social vice).

I don't agree with their anti-alcohol policy--it is, among other things, unBiblical!--but if they have chosen that policy, wouldn't it be hypocritical for them to take money from a company devoted to something they disapproved of?

I mean, what if a Quaker or Mennonite college were to take money from a company that manufactured military equipment? Or a Roman Catholic college from a contraceptive manufacturer?

At CU, the basketball arena is named the Coors Events Center. There's no giant logo on the court however (the school's logo goes there, not a sponsor's).
