See... that's why you go for artificial. Even well-watered natural conifers can go up like a Roman candle. And if they're dry... hoo-boy!

At the end of a Christmas season one year, we put our then dry tree in the back yard and set it on fire. Talk about intense! Makes me think twice about getting a "real" tree every year.

The tree did not "explode". It may have burned very quickly as dry, but still green, evergreens will do, but it did not explode.
Who is this "local6 news"? Their reporters sure seem to find and/or witness a large number of strange occurences, e.g., "Mom Sues After 5-Year-Old Allegedly Served Long Island Iced Tea" and "'Screaming' Rabid Cat Attacks 15 In Neighborhood" in just the last 3 days.
Does Snopes find "Local6" to be an unusually good source of stuff?

I would suggest that an explosion is when material is prejected outwards, an implosion is when it is projected inwards, and if the stuff simply stays in one place rather than being projected, it would be neither. I hope that makes sense.

The main thing that defines a real explosion (high explosive) is that the energy releasing reaction occurs at the shockwave boundary passing through the material. So the whole mass of explosive breaks down pretty instantaneously.
But commonly, anything that goes up in a rapid energy releasing reaction is called an explosion.

Exploding debate aside, I'm surprised there has been no remark about spiders in it yet. That's the first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title.

To me, this is why you just don't put a tree anywhere near a candle. That seems like a "well duh" thing to me. Why in the world would you have a lit candle, or a flame of any kind, near a Christmas tree?
DUH.
Seems to be common sense to me. Don't keep a flame anywhere near a Christmas tree. Don't leave your lights plugged in, don't leave the lights on unattended.
Pretty simple, really.
