With news of the death of Johnny Cash I was thinking about his brother Tommy Cash who recorded a hit song "Six White Horses". This was a tribute to John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King in which the six white horses metaphor is used to describe the departure to heaven.

Does anyone know how this expression originated?

Is it a part of some bible passage?

Starts singing: "She'll be drivin' six white horses when she comes?"

OK, it's a traditional funeral carriage--drawn by 6 white horses. But why it's traditoinal, I don;t know. The Gillman Funeral folks in the UK will get you a carriage an 6 white horses for £2700. This photo is only 4 horses, however.

No, that line is not to the song I refer to; rather it goes "goodbye John; six white horses have come to take you home." The following lines say goodbye Bobby and then goodbye Martin.

Seems like there's a number of songs and poems with that theme.

Here's one song, and here's one really bad poem.

But I think this is the one you want, by Tommy Cash. It's song No. 6.

Here's one explanation for the six white horses at JFK's funeral.
