Saw this in the paper today in an article about Phuket (careful with that pronunciation!) Thai Kitchen.

Among classic international business bungles:

-Got Milk? The ad campaign had to be overhauled for Spanish-speaking markets when a direct translation asked Latinos ``Are you lactating?''

-Coca-Cola. Early attempts to replicate the drink's name in China produced ``bite the wax tadpole'' or ``female horse stuffed with wax,'' depending on the dialect.

-Parker Pen. A poor translation in Mexico transformed the slogan ``It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you'' into ``It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.''

-Vicks. Changed its product name to Wicks before entering the German market after learning Vicks sounds too much like a German expletive.

a few more marketing faux pas:

-Muslims rioted and ransacked a shoe store in Bangladesh after mistaking a Thom McAn logo on sandals for the Arabic letters for Allah.

-A baby food manufacturer raised eyebrows in an African nation when the largely illiterate populace thought the jars contained ground-up babies -- literally, baby food.

-Kentucky Fried Chicken's ``Finger Lickin' Good'' slogan translated into the less-appetizing ``Eat your fingers off'' in Chinese.

-Schweppes Tonic Water became Schweppes Toilet Water in Italian.

-In French-Canadian slang, large breasts are called Big Macs. MacDonald's reports its sandwiches are selling well there.

Some of these are debunked in the main pages;

Bite the Wax Tadpole

Ground Up Babies

I will try and find more for you.

Speaking as a living, breathing, card-carrying French Canadian, translating "Mac" as breasts doesn't happen. It's not a euphamism that has ever (to my knowledge) been popular to any significant degree.

McDicks menus all render Big Mac in french as: "Big Mac".

While "Gros Jos" is the rough equivalent of "big jugs", "Jos" isn't used here as a proper name, and Joe is not the french equivalent of Mac.

I will grant that somebody somewhere may call the Big Mac "Gros Jos" in the same vein I nickname the restaurant McDicks. Neither nickname can be blamed on the Corporation.

Big Macs sell pretty good no matter where in North America you go. It doesn't sell any better here than elsewhere.

Many of the others "translations" have long been verified to be false in various articles scattered about the debunkings section of this website. I shall leave the bookachows as a homework assignment for the original poster.

Thanks. I figured some of them, like the Big Mac one, would be debunked right away. Thanks too, Moose.
