Well, color me happy! Fred Clark over at Slacktivist has begun his critique of _Left Behind_ again. Yay! It's been a long time, but if you're a fan, he's recently started updating weekly. (If you're new to Slacktivist's Christian debunking of Jenkins and Lehaye, start at the bottom of this page. Fred Clark on Left Behind. It gets juicy in about the third or fourth post up).

Fred Clark's deconstruction of the Left Behind series is both engaging and informative, skewering Lahaye's and Jenkins' world-view with great skill. More power to him.

We discussed this site on another Snopes thread, which is now unfortunately archived.

Honestly, I think this is some of the most biased critiquing I've ever read. I thought it was funny how he claims that God's rapturing the children means he's "slaughtering" them (after all, they're going to Heaven, which means they're dead), and leaving the teenagers behind means God hates them because they aren't good enough to be taken. God's damned if He does, and damned if He doesn't, I guess.

Then later, he's talking about Sharon and Jeff Williams, where it's mentioned that Jeff did something bad to Sharon (not stated exactly what) for which Sharon tossed him out, but then later forgave him and took him back. Fred concludes that the authors somehow think that all women must forgive anything their husbands do, even if the husbands are abusive. I'm not seeing how one example of a woman forgiving her husband for an unnamed transgression equals a statement that women have a duty to stay with abusive husbands, no matter what, eespecially since Sharon DID kick Jeff out at first, meaning her ultimate forgiveness was a choice she made, not some sort of duty she felt obligated to have.

He just seems to be purposely setting out to see the worst in everything, even if it means reading things into the books that aren't even remotely there.

I do think Mr. Clark misses the point a lot in his observations of the characters. He keeps pointing out how they're such jerks as though that's a flaw in the writing, but it's pretty obvious to me that LaHaye and Jenkins intended the characters to be that way in order to show why they were left behind.

For the most part, however, I find his observations quite astute.

Are they, or aren't they? Is Jesus the only one to live after death, or are Elijah and Lazarus also? (And Mary?)

Tricky question, and (as you correctly note) theologically, you're damned either way. (i.e., either interpretation entails a heresy.)

It's the skewering of the writing style that I find most hilarious. Assuming the critique is fair, of course. Since I won't be reading the book myself, I don't know for a fact that it contains elaborate breakdowns of logistical arrangements, while skimping on basic description of imagery. It may be only that the critique overrepresents those portions, and selectively omits the others.

But if it's fair, then... damn! That's bad writing, y'all.

It's not great writing. I've read the first four books or so and felt that the authors seemed to be in too much of a rush to tell the story (gotta get 'em out before the rapture happens, I guess). I did feel that they were rather cleverly plotted and not quite as preachy as I was expecting them to be. I did find myself caring about what happened to the characters. I might go back and finish the series someday, but I'm not in a rush to get back to them.

And speaking of which, in the recently released prequels, it turns out that the Anti-Christ is the genetically engineered son of two gay parents, and is raised by a 'group of international bankers'.

Now honestly, is anyone going to tell me that that's 'clever plotting' as opposed to some pCm wet dream about the end times (how many right-wing cliches can you hit in an origin story anyway)?

[Eek!] [Roll Eyes] [Embarrassed]

I've got two questions: WTF are Mr. LaHaye and Mr. Jenkins smoking and why aren't they sharing it with the rest of us good Christians?

The whole point of the rapture is that they go up alive and whole, transformed into heavenly bodies without death. That is why the Bible calls it the hope of the believer. :-)

Which way is up from the surface of a sphere?

Won't they run out of oxygen at 5 miles 'up'; and freeze solid shortly thereafter?
