From the "trivia" section on Charlie Chaplin of the Internet Movie Database:

quote:
Adolf Hitler was a big fan of Chaplin, so big in fact that he grew his mustache like Chaplin's character "The Little Tramp." Before that, Hitler's moustache was a 1880's type handlebar.
Okay, this *sounds* like a big fat UL. Is there any truth to it? On a related note, does anybody have a pic of Hitler wearing a goofy handlebar mustache?

It appears to be a UL.

This implies that Chaplins films were banned by the Nazi's and the resemblance was coincidental.

This seems to be even more reliable and follows in the same vein.

I did find this in which he appears to have a larger moustache. I found a few of a younger looking hitler, but they all appeared to sport the standard 'stash...

Umm - I think Hitler is the 'young' guy to the right -- the one with all the facial 'growth' is way too old to be Hitler... and actually looks a little like the Kaiser....

Um ... Warlok, I think ChrisJ knew that. The question was, did Hitler have a "handlebar" mustache at one time? During WWI, he had something close.

full view of same picture - from this page where accompanying text (from near the bottom page 2 of "Rare German war pictures") also says it's Hitler on the right and that's his dog Fuchsl at his feet.

1915 picture claiming Hitler is the one on the left.

two WWI group pics near the bottom may include a Hitler with early toothbrush 'stache action.

Hmm, I'm not sure that a shrewd public manipulator like Hitler would have chosen to look like a film comedian, even a popular one.

I think Occam's razor can come into play here. My guess is that in WWI, handlebar moustaches were fashionable, so Hitler wore one. After the war, the fashion faded, so he adopted a more contemporary style. This was coincidentally similar to the style that Chaplin selected for his tramp at about the same time.

Charlie Chaplin was Jewish, right? If Hitler hated them so much he launched a mass murder, why would he be a fan of a Jew?

Nope. He wasn't a Jew, but he played one in a movie...

No, Chaplin was not Jewish. His half-brother Sidney was mostly Jewish, but that was through his father's side. He very much supported the Jewish during WWII, but he was not one himself.

Chaplin was, however, a Gypsy, which were also a target of the Holocaust. Although it is impossible to calculate due to the fact that they did not submit to national censuses, it is estimated that between 500,000 and 1,500,000 Gypsies were murdered during the Holocaust.

Where do you get that information? There is nothing in his background to indicate that he was of Romani descent. http://www.utexas.edu/features/

Also, Chaplin was a Marxist, and Hitler was not a fan of Communism (he couldn't stand the competition)

Sorry, I screwed up the link in my original post. It has been corrected.

In pertinent part, it states:

quote:
One of the most famous Roma is Charlie Chaplin. Many people thought he was Jewish because he criticized Hitler, explained Hancock, but Chaplin knew of the anti-Gypsy attacks in Germany. Other Roma in the arts include actors Yul Brenner, Bob Hoskins and Rita Hayworth, and jazz pioneer Django Reinhardt.

I heard jokes about this, but never taken seriously. I don't know why, but for some reason, the younger hitler looks a little like chaplin to me facially, even without the mustache. Does anyone else see that, or am I seeing things? Maybe hitler thought it looked good on that facial frame and tried it out? Don't ask me to try explaining why he would keep it, though.

Hitler doesn't even look like Hitler in those sans-mustache pictures. And in this one, for some reason I get the feeling the mustache was photoshopped out or something. He also kind of looks like he's smuggling something under his coat in that one.

But, uh, back to the original topic here, I really doubt Hitler got his look from Chaplin, they suggested in the CBS TV movie about Hitler that he had that mustache to have a distinct look, similar to Lenin's (similarly distinct, not a similar look). I don't know if it's true but it sounds like a plausible explanation to me.

Well, yes, they are all photoshopped. I apologize for not pointing that out clearer.

Oooh, and I fell for it, too! Been batting a big fat zero lately. But, for some reason, the pics kind of look like Chaplin. Sparverius had a good point that I liked. Maybe it was a trend... Maybe Hitler saw it and thought it would look good on him... and people are crediting him seeing Chaplin as the tramp...

Ok, I'll shut up now. (hides behind wall, pulls out donuts)
