How many people said "no" and didn't make it on the video, is what I'd like to know.
I definitely 100% knew what women's suffrage was at that age, and I was failing out of a plain, ordinary, not National Seal of Excellence school at that time.
At the very least, the girls should have asked what it was. It's a personal policy of mine not to sign something I don't understand.

True, bue even still, I think the number found is far too many. The fact that they were able to find that many English-speaking people who did not know that is sad. (non-English-speakers at least have the excuse of not understanding the question.)

A very wise policy.

TB Tabby has it. The Man Show did a bit just like this a few years back and, at least on the film they showed, only one woman saw through it and said something.
Remember the days when being a college student acutally meant something.

I knew what the term meant, but if someone had phrased it, "End women's sufferage", I probably would have assumed "sufferage" was being used to mean "inability to vote". So therefore I would have been all for signing it - except women already had the right to vote, so I probably would have asked a few more questions.

If I did not know what "sufferage" meant, I would probably confuse it for "suffering," which I suspect happened here.

So would I, but I still would have asked for more details before signing.
But is it really so scandalous, for them not to know a word that hasn't been mainstream for 50 years? I understand the feeling that college students should know their history, but a lot of students specialize in certain subjects while letting others slide. I'm sure the students in the video knew that women didn't always have the right to vote, but they might not have specifically remembered the word "suffrage".

But in that case, you wouldn't, in fact, know what the term meant. You'd know that it referred to voting, but not the actual meaning.

Not what I meant. I knew "suffrage" meant "the right to vote". But I also knew it wasn't a widely-used word, and if someone else used it in a context where it sounded like they meant "inability to vote", I would have picked up on that. Where I live, people misuse words all the time, and educated people sometimes have to get used to picking up the context of a sentence, rather than the actual words.

Rick Mercer, here in Canada, does something similar called "Talking to Americans" where he gets Americans, some famous, some just "man on the street" to say some incredibly stupid things about Canada.
Much as I like Mercer I don't like this schtick.

Surely, even if the word "suffrage" isn't in the mainstream any more, the girls should have heard of the word "suffragette"?

Probably not "suffragette," but "suffragist."
And why should just the girls have heard it?

I didn't say that just the girls would have heard it. I was just refering to the people that were asked in the video, who all happened to be girls.
Were sufragettes called "suffragists" in the US?

Because the boys actually knew what it meant and they were all for ending it.
PS. Don't women fill each other in on the entire feminist history? Isn't that why they go to the bathroom in pairs?

Any particular reason why they only asked female college students though? It seems to me that that is what AnglRdr is asking.

Yes, to trollface's question. "Suffragette" was intended as an insulting joke (small female campaigners for the vote, geddit? Rib-tickling). It was reclaimed by some of the women themselves, but others are still not terribly keen.

Because it's funnier to have people signing a petition to take away their own right to vote than it is to have people signing one to take away other people's right to vote?

Probably because it is more "funny" to have women signing a petition to end women's right to vote. Also, the irony of having them sign a petition that would remove their ability to sign petitions (since legal petitions are limited to registered voters).

That's a no-win choice. Am I laughably stupid or horribly misogynistic...
