As the nation approaches the grim milestone of 3,000 war fatalities, the seaside memorial in one of California's most popular coastal destinations has reached a crossroads of its own. The group of veterans that organizes a weekly tribute has decided to stop adding crosses because it is struggling to keep pace with the tally of death.

Could be worse, I suppose. I mean, if they were trying to commemorate Iraqi dead, they'd have fallen behind long ago.
Good job nobody's trying to do that, I reckon.

The British lost over 19,000 in one day at the Battle of the Somme, with 57,000 total casualties. I think the Iraqis lost about 2,000 in when 3rd Mech drove into Baghdad.

Then again, significant battles used to take a couple of days or a week and featured tens of thousands of people lining up and shooting at each other until one side backed down in the old days - what we have now in Baghdad and certain other parts of Iraq is basically one long battle that's lasted for some three years now.

You don't have to go that far back to see different kinds of battles with huge death tolls. Look at the incendary bombings of 67 major Japanese cities in WW2. 70 000 killed in one night, just in Tokyo.
Modern weapons and a lopsided balance of power has made it possible to deliver an insane amount of hurt in a very short time.
