Many years ago I read a book in the local library by a (Dr ?) Marina (or Maria) Popovich (Popovitsj ?), who claimed to be a Russian airforce officer with an interest in explaining UFO sightings. The book was a classic collection of fireball-in-the-sky stories, accounts of abductions, and "historical" contacts, with a few Yeti's and the Tunguska event thrown in for good measure.

I've been trying to find some information about this author, but so far all I've found is links to the book, some tinfoil hat sites praising her work, and lots of links to conspiracy theories about the loss of Phobos-2.

Does anyone know anything about her ?

I haven't heard of her, but what are some of the sites you've found?

Popovich (Vasil'eva) Mariya Leonidovna (born July 20th, 1931) was indeed one of the top Soviet test pilots. She got her pilot lincense in 1951, worked as a flight instructor, later - a test pilot, and for 5 years she was the lead test pilot in Kiev Antonov's plant. She's a Hero of Socialist Labor, and this alone means she was among the top pilots. Popovich holds a Ph.D. equivalent in engineering. At some point she studiet literature part-time in Moscow, however, she never completed the degree. Before writing her UFO book (first print in 2003, it's not that many years ago) she wrote several books of poetry and nonfiction, however, I cannot attest to their quality.

Yes, it is true that she was on a cosmonaut squad and was on a short list for the Tereshkova flight, however, she was regarded a backup since she had a 2 year old girl at the time and due to the risks associated with space flights single Tereshkova was preferred.

As of the UFO book - after retiring in 1984 (55 used to be retiry age for women, things might go even faster for the jobs like a pilot) she seems to take interest in paranormal, and, as her bio goes, she "worked on torsion fields". "Torsion fields" is a big fat piece of pseudo science in Russia, although due to the fact that it looked somewhat like science (they've got equations, they've got some fancy process descriptions...) it serves like a "bridge hobby" that brings adequate people closer to the foil-hat flock (a second red flag, "New Chronology", is actually a recent hobby of Garry Kasparov and a good indicator of his demise).
