Heard this one at a class at church last night. At least the speaker on the tape said that he didn't know if it was true, but remarked that it should be.
The story goes that while campaigning for re-election Bush's caravan stopped to refuel. Barbara recognized the gas station attentent as an ex-boyfriend and talked and chatted with him for a while. When she returns to the presentianal limo and tells George who the gas attendant is, he says "just think, if you'd married him, you'd be married to a gas station attendant. But since you married me, you get to be the wife of the most powerful man in the world!" Barbara then replies, "George, if I had married him, he would be President."

Funny story, but I can't imagine that it's anywhere near the truth. There's no way anyone Barbara Pierce Bush (Pierce as in Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the USA - she is distantly related to him) would have dated would end up pumping gas - especially not at least 50 years later!

I heard this one on "West Wing," only with "ditch digger" instead of "gas station attendant."
