Comment: One hundred fifty years ago President Abraham Lincoln told a
grieving mother, Lydia Baxby, who reportedly disliked Lincoln and the war,
"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your
bereavement." Our current president told a grieving mother, Cindy Sheehan,
who dislikes President Bush and the war, "I have to get on with my life."

Did President Bush ever say this?

Didn't he say that to a reporter in reference to Sheehan? That's my recollection. If so, then yes, he said it, but no, he didn't say it directly to her.

Swept away by my feelings, ashamed and confused
But just now it's enough to be walking with you

Who can believe that a comment referring to "Heavenly Father" would generate less of a sh*tstorm today than "I have to get on with my life"?

George W. Bush talking about the heavenly father would hardly create much of a shitstorm I'd think ...

an FYI and for whatever it's worth on the Lincoln part of the story. The entire original comment appears to be taken from a letter to the editor to the Tennessean (google "lydia baxby" and you can find the letter). The Lincoln letter, according to Abraham Lincoln Online, was written to Lydia Bixby (not Baxby) upon Lincoln being informed that she had lost five sons to the Civil War. This information turned out to be incorrect - she lost 2 sons to combat, one honorably discharged, one deserted and one either deserted or was taken POW. The authenticity of the letter, some believe that John Hay actually wrote the letter, is in question because Bixby destroyed the original letter because she was a Confederate sympathyzer

Full quote. Source: Ken Herman, Cox News Service

quote:
"But whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president, that's part of the job," Bush said on the ranch. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say."

"But," he added, "I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life."
