Comment: I am hoping you can help me get to the bottom of this, because
for some odd reason, this rumor I heard is driving me nuts!

Evanesence's "My Immortal." I have heard that the song is actually about
spousal abuse, but I have listened to the lyrics hundreds of times (and
even located what is supposed to be the exact lyrics from a few Internet
locations)and cannot find any indication of this. Can you find out the
real story? I really like the song and it would seriosly taint the song
for me to find out that is the meaning behind it, but I just HAVE to know.

Caller: Hi. I Was Just Really Wondering What Inspired You To Write The Song "my Immortal" Because It's Helped Me Through Rough Times And A Bad Death In The Family Recently. What Inspired You To Write It?

Amy: Thank You So Much, And I'm Sorry. I Have Been Through An Experience Like That Myself When I Was A Very Young Girl, But That's Not What That Song Is About Actually. It Is The One Song That Was Ben's. Ch He Wrote It When He Was Very Young, Wrote Basically The Whole Song By Himself. I Hate To Tell You This: Ben Kind Of Doesn't Write From Self-experience. It's Sort Of A Hypothetical, But The Vibe Of It And The Vibe That I Relate To And What I Can Take From It With My Similar Experience Is It's When You Feel Like You've Dwelled On Someone That's Gone For Way Too Long And You Feel Almost Haunted By The Memory And It's When You're At The Point You're Not Wishing They Were Back Anymore But Asking For The Presence To Leave You, Which Is Kind Of A Scary Thing But At The Same Time It's About Where You're To Be Released And Set Free, So It's Beautiful, Too.

Wasn't that the title of Fiona Apple's last album?

I've heard that it was about the relationship between Amy and I don't remember his first name but Ben comes to mind, his last name is Moody, IIRC. He was the bassist or guitarist, not sure. Never heard the rumor of it being about spousal abuse. New to me to hear that. [lol]

I sang this song when I tried out for American Idol this year... I'm not famous yet so....

Amy and Ben were a couple for a while. They broke up and she started dating the lead singer of Seether. Ben left the band shortly after this, and went to play with Avril Lavigne.

Well, I'm no expert....
And I am probably reading MY experiences into the song (as all good songs should allow)...

but,

It seems to me to be about a couple, one of whom suffered some abuse as a child and still cannot let go, allowing it to affect the current relationship.

I interviewed her for a radio station back home (along with 3 other people), and she said that most of Evanescence's songs are written from hypotheticals, or stories from their friends. HOWEVER, "Tourniquet" is not written by Evanescence. Also, Ben Moody did not leave because of a fall-out. His explanation is that while he and Amy were best friends, being on the road all the time made them get into a lot of arguments. They needed to distance themselves. Amy Lee doesn't comment, because she prefers to have her life be kept relatively private.

*hijack* And if you've ever wondered how tall Amy Lee is...I'm 5'0", and as you can see, Amy is not much taller than I am... -

I love that photo, Mickey. There's you and Amy, looking cute and normal, and there are the boys, all dark and tormented and glaring. The guy making the "horns" looks like a grade-A knob. Isn't Evanescence a Christian band?

Listening to them as I read and post--I think you can take any of their songs many different ways, as just great music, having a message, etc. Whatever. [Smile]

(4/16/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Evanescence's interview in the April 18 issue of Entertainment Weekly has created a stir in the Christian music world. As a result, the band's label, Wind-Up Records, is pulling its album from Christian music stores.

Vocalist Amy Lee said in the interview, "There are people that are hell-bent on the idea that we're a Christian band in disguise, and that we have some secret message. We have no spiritual affiliation with this music. It's simply about life experience." Lee adds, "I guarantee that if the Christian bookstore owners listened to some of those songs, they wouldn't sell the CD."

Lee's band mate Ben Moody said in the interview, "I'm not ashamed of my spiritual beliefs, but I in no way incorporate them into this band. We're actually high on the Christian charts, and I'm like, What the f--k are we even doing there?"

"My Immortal" is about how Evanescence Girl secretly wants to quit her stupid band and shack up with one Johnny Slick, who is a god, and is therefore the subject of "My Immortal". There is a budding counter-theory that she pines for First of Two; this is absurd. Were this the case, the name of the song would be "My Right Wing Immortal". And she would be a blonde.

I thought Tourniquet has a heavy Christian slant. I can understand the band trying not to identify themselves as a Christian band. However, I wouldn't blame the listeners for assuming that they are a Christian band either

Tourniquet, if I recall correctly, wasn't written by Evanescence.
quote:

The song was originally released as "My Tourniquet" by Soul Embraced, a band featuring future Evanescence drummer Rocky Gray. The version on FALLEN is an adaptation of the song.

Note about Amy wearing pink: because she's known from the dark colors, she doesn't like wearing dark colors anymore. She actually asked me where I got my shirt, because she really liked it.

Ah, I think there's more to the story regarding the whole "are they a christian band" thing.

Sure, they made it pretty clear in that famous entertainment weekly interview that at that point in time they did not want to be considered a christian band, but they weren't always singing that tune.

Christianity Today magazine has done quite a lot of reporting on them, such as this summary article, and there appears to be some salient facts that evanesence seems to be glossing over, such as:

* Ben and Amy originaly met at a church camp
* most of their initial touring and performances were in the christian subculture; at christian venues
* A great many of their lyrics, including the "my immortal," can be read quite easily as theological reflections about god
* They've given a great many interviews where they emphasise and talk freely about their christian faith (which they now dismiss as "youthful indescretions")
* The eventually signed with a label that houses several other Christian and pseudo-christian bands
* they allowed - or atleast did not object - to that label distributing their merchandise in christian stores
*They have had many bona fide christian bands open for them on their tours. In fact, the guitarist who replaced moody was once in another christian band.

The way I see it, there's two most probable interpretations of all this:

1) the sympathetic interpretation: they started as a christian band, but, coincidently, about the same time they got famous they also totaly lost their faith and thus decided to declare themselves a non-christian band. hence the entertainment weekly interview, which served as their big break from that past.

2) the cynical interpretation. they never were a christian band, but, having a good grasp of statistics, realised that since the christian subculture is only a fraction the size of the mainline music industry it would therefore be a hell of a lot less competative. Ergo, it would be much easier for them to find medium success if they played a marginally christian line, and hey, you never know, they might get luck and have a "cross over hit" like those jars of clay guys, or pod! Lo and behold, that actually happened, and when evanesence has officialy snuck through the christian back door into succes in the mainline industry, they ditched the christian tools that helped get them there like smoked out cigarette buts. hence the entertainment weekly interview, which served as their "see ya later, suckers"

Nevertheless, I will say that there's a live piano only version of my immortal floating around the internet which is stunning.

It says "Drive Like Jehu". It's a band name. If you notice, the tall guy on the left is wearing a baseball cap that says "Cold"- another band's name.

I had always thought that "My Immortal" was about a bad break up and having to let go of the presence of someone you loved. I'm glad it's not a song about spousal abuse because that would have ruined it for me too!
