Against all odds, a Western romance about two men, "Brokeback Mountain," has corralled the cultural zeitgeist, making it safe for our national funny bone to come out of the closet.
Bush was asked about this movie at his townhall meeting in Kansas last week. He seemed really uncomfortable. He switched the topic quickly to ranching.

A question for those who have seen the movie... do they eat pudding at any stage?
Nope. Just beans. And whiskey - lots of whiskey.

How long has the "Brokeback Mountain" screenplay been around for? Was the movie announced before the South Park Film Festival episode? Kind of funny, I immediately thought about this episode when I heard about "Brokeback Mountain". Could be a coincidence, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone must have been visionaries to come up with the idea of a successful movie about gay cowboys...but they should have come out with that first...would have been hilarious to see Big Gay Al and Garrison as cowboys...

I agree 100%.
I looked up "Brokeback Mountain" on Wikipedia and it says the original was written in 1997, which is the same year South Park was created. The Film Festival episode aired in August of 1998, so it was written before that episode. Not sure when the movie was announced, though.

The author lives in Centennial, Wyoming which is about 35 miles from where I live in Laramie. She also worte the story upon which the Shipping News was based.
I would bet the Brokeback story had somthing to do with the Matt Shepard case.

I dunno - I recall making gay cowboy jokes back in the early '80s...

Let's just get one thing clear... (this from a native Texan) they were NOT cowboys, they were SHEEPHERDERS!

Not really. They were a couple of out-of-work cowboys who, at the beginning of the film, took a temporary seasonal job watching over a flock of sheep. They both came from ranching/rodeo backgrounds, and they returned to that type of work afterwards.
