Comment: I just found your site. Pretty informative.

I noticed that you claim that the legend about a death on the Wizard of Oz
set is false. It is not. I have seen the scene in question on my wifes
old copy of the video ( I understand it has been edited out of the most
recent release). It did happen. But, it was not a munchkin, it was the
first actor hired to be the tin man (not Buddy Ebson). He was fired for
being drunk on set. At the end of the scene where Dorothy meets the tin
man, you can very plainly see the man hang himself TWICE in the very far
background. He jumps from the tree, but doesn't get it right the first
time, so you can see him climbe the ladder behind the tree and jump again.

Again, I have seen this with my own eyes. If it is not an actual haning,
then it is a pretty good effect, although I don't know why they would do
that so far back in the background.

It's my theory that he tried to hang himself the first time because he was drunk. Just as he was falling from the tree, he realized he didn't want to die and he had made a mistake. As luck would have it, the rope snapped. Then, realizing he couldn't even tie a rope around a tree limb, much less get a job, he rethought his rethinknig and realized that he did in fact have nothing to live for. And thus he hanged himself a second time succesfully. How do i know all this? My grandfathers second cousin twice removed was a munckin, and he witnessed the hanging and said the man told him this just before he hanged himself a second time.

Comment: i seriously think you guys are just saying that to make us not be
scared and you can see him fall and then it doesnt work then he climbs
back up the tree and does it and you can see it swinging. o and the rumor
is that it was a girl and she tried out to be dorthy and the director told
her that she was way to fat and short but she could be a munckin and she
did but after her scene she went on the forest set and climbed up the tree
and feel down the first time and she climbed back up becase it didnt work
and you could see her swinging bbecause she got so mad she hung
herself.and if you look you can see her hair.and you guys are just trying
to make the director sound good. The reason I'm saying this is because
there are alot of rumors about it and i don't see how so many rumors can
be spread and still believed for so long if their not true. Also a birds
wings cant swing around and look like a hanging perosn without somehow
coming detachatched and i dont see how thats posible,

Thats right and everything on TV, the radio and who could forget the internet is true. I mean they couldn't say it if it wasn't true right.

You don't get down off a tree -- you get down off a duck. She was molesting the bird which caused the bird to retaliate by hanging her.

I've heard the debate so many times. I've even watched the clip a number of times on the site and it does indeed look to be a bird to me as they say it is. I have also heard that the movie had been editedm, that the clip is from the edit, and that the original looks different and very much like a hanging. Well, I have yet to see this "original" portion of the film whether online or not, so I can only conclude that it's a hoax that continues to float around.

To get down off a tree just spray it with water. Afterwards, remember to stop swinging the ducks so close to the trees.

But...
quote:
Usage: For both transitive and intransitive senses 1b the past and past participle hung, as well as hanged, is standard. Hanged is most appropriate for official executions but hung is also used . Hung is more appropriate for less formal hangings .
Therefore, we must ask the question; Was it an official Munchkin execution or a much more informal suicide?

Comment: In reference to the "urban legend" about the munchkin killing
himself, I also have heard this. However, I had heard several years ago
from the Phil Donahue show. Phil had one of the munchkin actors on as a
guest (unfortunately I cannot remember his name as he has done several
movies and also had been on Oprah in more recent years) who described the
scene and why it had happened, who does reveal there actually was a real
munchkin who did infact ahng himself. However, he wasn't supposed to
actually die, he was only trying to 'sabotage' the film to a certain
extent, in an effort to cost the producers more money. The munchkins had
several contract and working condition complaints, for example: not being
individually named in the credits (course we all know it would have been
too much to put all 125 names on the credits) extreme long working hours,
poor fitting costumes, unconfortable make-up and paints, poor off-staging
accomidations, wanting more money, etc. There were two munchkins
actually at that backdrop, one who was holding the rope so the other could
cliomb up and then acess it. You can see that the frist attempt up the
ladder, the munchkin falls, and then scrambles up again. It was only at
the point when swinging and actually hitting the backside of the backdrop,
does this cause him to snap his neck. I only wish I could remeber the
partuicular munchkins name who spoke openly about this on several
occasions, but hopefully someone out there may be able to research this
out. But I do have to say I would be quite interested in seeing the
"bird theory" in the frame by frame instance, as I have seen the "hanging"
in a slow motion - both on projection and tape- and I still see a human
being hung.

Comment: Not to be rude or anything but that whole "Bird flapping its
wings" thing is a lie. Why? My mom and I watched a documentary of the
behind the scences of The Wizard of Oz. We saw the footage cosely and
thywe even showed us befoe shots of the person. My mom told me to watch
the movie closely and look in the woods in the trees for a person whereing
black moveing around strangly when Dorothy the scarecrow and the tin man
were walkin down the yellow brick road. Which I did and I saw clearly a
person hanging. CLEARLY!!! fOR WHAT REASON i DONT KNOW. iT COULD BE FOR
ANY REASON. bUT WHAT i'M TRYIN TO SAY IS DONT LIE AND DENY THAT ITS THERE.
everyone that i'VE TALKED TO THATS SEEN THE MOVIE HAS TOLD ME ABOUT IT.
tHATS WHAT i HAVE TO SAY ABOUT YOU DENYING THE CLEAR TRUTH. a bird couldnt
not be flapping from a rope. It could've been a person used as a prop to
look like something or hold something up.The cord or rope that the person
was tied to could've pulled to tight. That person could've been there for
any reason as a part of the crew.

Comment: I'm sorry, but i came across in your film section that in the
wizard of oz a munchkin hung himself and you said that was false. you are
false. in the original copy, not the one that they continuously play on
tv or the new release that has been "doctored" so it looks like a bird,
you can see the munchkin hang himself. I also have inside information on
this, my professor, Edward Garland, (no relation to Judy Garland) met one
of the munchkins at some sort of a conference. he proceded to ask whether
or not a munchkin had truly hung himself. before he even asked the
question the acor that played a munchkin replied, "No, No! THat was a
BIRD!" very suspiciously. after analyzing the original release you can
see the shadow of a munchkin climbing up a ladder, following off, climbing
up again, wraping something around his neck, jumping and swinging right to
left to right and to his death while the rest of the characters are
skipping away down the yellow brick road. This all occurs in the middle
of the movie, toward the upper left side of the screen. It is true. If
you don't believe check for yourself.
Sorry, once again, but i cannot handle these lies.
Oh, i almost forgot, the reason why this was kept secret for so long was
because MGM threatened their actor's pay if news of this leaked out. That
is a fact, not an urban legend.

Ah. The Friend Of A Munchkin strikes again. And I believe if you go back far enough, they are related. It's a conspiracy!

If only that were true - it's such a great mental image. How jolly. Now, were they swinging in time with the skipping, or skipping in time with the swinging?

Oh! I almost forgot! (insert delusional rationalization).

So, they threatened their actor's pay to keep it secret, then released it in the movie. Of course, it all makes sense now. [Smile]

I love that this commentor even admits that the FOAM said the "acor" said it was a bird, but still doesn't believe it. Assuming all the "acors" kept is quiet so their pay wouldn't be suspended, the movie is 64 years old. I sure hope they are not still waiting for those paychecks.

What I find amazing is how this Munchkin was able to sneak onto the lot, get past security, and not be caught by the countless cast/crew members who were on set at the time, not to mention the fact that the other 150 or so little people wouldn't be on the lot for another month or so... :-)
