I seem to recall seeing somewhere, at some point, that signatures are limited to four lines. Lately I've seen several that are longer, and I'm curious:
Has the four line thing been lifted? Do the four lines mean four lines total, or can you have a space between each one, making it technically seven lines? If I link to a snopes page as part of my sig, does that count towards my total?

The FAQ is a great place to check.

Yes, I've noticed a lot of signatures that are much longer than four lines....
Reminds me of my very, Very, VERY first post. It was much longer than 4 lines and 4K PMed me that rule. (I was very grateful for the discretion!)

AW- If you took the space out from between your mom's quote and your MySpace link you'd have room for the snopes link on a separate line.

I had more than four lines in my sig when I first signed on, too, and I think but can't remember for sure that it was Roadie who was nice enough to PM me about it - mainly because I had brought attention to myself by asking a question about attributing quotes. There appears to be no automatic cut-off if you exceed four lines, but there is if you exceed 250 characters. That being said, I think we should all abide by the request, though some don't. I bet everyone who has more than four lines will be very nicely asked to change it when the faux pas is discovered.

Same thing happened to me. Dunno if it was my first post or not. I had spaces in between every line of my sig making it longer than four lines. I was discreetly PM'd, changed it, and all's been well.

This is really strange. I've been paying more attention to my sig since this thread was started and have discovered that in some posts it is four lines, and in other posts it is five. In this thread, so far, it is four according to what I see on my screen. I haven't changed my screen resolution or anything of that nature. Does anyone know what causes this? It may be a moot point, anyway, as I'm considering changing, but I'm still curious.

In this thread, Signora, your sig is definitely three lines. There isn't one line that looks like it would need to break. At what point does the line break for you?
And what is your screen resolution setting? And what size monitor do you have? And, um, can you point out a thread where it's five lines for you?
Edited to add that if you're seeing five lines where I'm seeing three, well, maybe my help here is probably moot. My monitor is 19 or 20 inches, and my screen resolution is set at 1280 x 1024, so I can get a lot of stuff on my screen. (Large icons make my eyes hurt.)

My monitor is small, probably 15", but I'm not sure. Oh, wait. I guess I could measure it. Yep, it's about 15" on the diagonal. Resolution is 800 × 600. I've tried setting it higher, but gaaahhh!
In this thread, the reason it is four lines (for me) is because "~~wanderwoman" goes to the forth line. In cases where it is five lines, "Harvey" drops down to another line. Here's a five-line one. Hmmm. There seems to be about a ¼" difference in the space on the left-hand side of this page and the left-hand side of the other one. Wonder why. That might make "Harvey" be a couple of letters too long to fit on the same line. By Jove, I think that's it!
Now my question is, "Why is the left-hand side space larger on one page than on another?" I suppose it's not that important, but I'm so curious about it.

Well, that just goes to show you how observant I am! Thanks!
The main thing is that I want to be within the board guidelines. I suppose, technically, I am.

Signora and others: In addition to theme borders, things like nickname length and long URLs or larger images will also play with the thread width which can change how your sig line appears on your own screen.

I tested it on your status to make sure, and < br > does the job.

Heh, speaking of monitor size affecting the signature length, Signora has a whopping SIX lines on my Blackberry! Bwa ha ha!
