Woman killed while shocking for worms

quote:
A Little Sioux woman appears to have died from electrocution when attempting to gather worms for her fish Friday morning.

Harrison County Sheriff Terry Baxter said the woman, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, appears to have been shocking the ground near her residence for night crawlers. Baxter said the ground was saturated with water.

He said the woman was using what appeared to be a homemade shocking device that was plugged into an electrical outlet.

When shocking the ground for worms always use UL approved worm shockers.

Ignorance on my part: is that sarcasm or is there such a thing? [lol]

Would that be Urban Legend approved worm shockers or Underwriters Laboratories approved worm shockers?

It was meant as sarcasm.

I know you can buy worm shockers, but i can't for the life of me believe there is a UL approved one.

(Snopster proves there is one in 5, 4, 3, 2....)

So, what's the best way to get worms to fish with without having to use electricity?

Back in my day we had to dig our worms. No fancy shockers or other fandangled doo-dads. Just good old fashioned elbow grease and a shovel. And there weren't no accidents, neither, 'cept that time Billy John got too close to the shovel and was laid out in a cold junk by Pa's follow-through.

My BF's father claims that if you put a large piece of tin on the ground and hit it with a hammer, the worms will think it's thundering and come up out of the ground for the rainshower. He says it works, I've never tried it.

I just buy mine from Wal-Mart. [Big Grin]
