On the news this morning was a story about a newborn baby abandoned in a neighborhood just a few blocks from the school where I teach. This is the third newborn baby abandoned in 2 years in the same area. Given that the town itself has a population of less than 6,000, I think that's extreme. The first two babies were alive, sadly, this third one was not. An autopsy will be done to determine cause of death and DNA testing to see if this baby is related to the other two. We have a very high teen pregnancy rate here, and the community at large is very accepting of teen mothers and fathers, and there is a county fire dept. sub station a couple miles away (CA has safe haven laws). What a sad way to start the week.
