Comment: Do you know if the movie Serial Mom is actually based on a true
story (like it says in the opening credits)?

I wish I could find a link (for proof for you), but I referenced many female murder sites (who knew there were so many!) and looked at google and yahoo and basically, Serial Mom was written by John Waters and is based purely on fiction.

It is so common in murder themed movies to use the line based on a true story that I'm sure being a bit of a fan of John Water's work that this was just a spoof. However thinking about Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ammityville Horror which were inspired by true stories, although not reminiscent of actual facts, it could be possible that Serial Mom may have been inspired by a true case, but I can't think of a single one that it resembles except maybe the one where that cheerleader's mather in Texas planned to murder her daughter's rival and her mother? That was apparently very high profile in America when it happened and spawned at least two TV movies.

Its only reality is drawn from the countless court cases that John Waters has sat in on over the years. It's a well known bit of trivia about him that he enjoys to be in the gallery at criminal trials, usually the most heinous ones he can find out about. The details in the movie are taken not from any single case but dozens of individual cases, none of which have any stake in claiming to be the movie's primary influence.

"The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom" w/ Holly Hunter and Beau Bridges [lol] I LOVE that movie! I've seen it so many times late night on cable [Big Grin]
