Can anybody confirm this? I was driving the other day when I saw a car with a Washington D.C. licence plate. It had "Washington D.C." at the top and the numbers just under that. What caught my eye was what was under that. The little motto that went under that read "Taxation Without Representation". Can somebody please let me know if I misread it, it was a joke tag, or what? Thanks.
Some DC people are unhappy that they don't have representation in the US House and Senate.
This, of course, was by design of the founding fathers, so that no "state" held the federal government. Personally I feel that if they don't like it, they can move .

You may exchange your existing valid tags for 'Taxation without Representation' tags for a $10 exchange fee at DMV C Street service location.
All new registrants receive 'Taxation without Representation' tags automatically. If you are obtaining new regular tags and do not want the Taxation without Representation tags, please inform the DMV employee at the time of registration, and you will receive the 'www.dc.gov' website tags.

Wow! That's probably the quickest answer I've gotten to a question I've posted. Thanks.
Alright, well I'm just going to go ahead and point out my idiocy here, but do citizens of Washington, D.C. not get catagorized as residents of Virginia or Maryland?
Also, if this needs to be moved to another catagory at this point, I understand this is getting to be more of a political question than automotive.

No, the District of Columbia is seperate state. Although, most residents of Nothern Virginia and South east maryland consider themselves to live in the DC suburbs

Negative to that here, Mad Jay. I consider myself a Virginia Citizen first and then a Northern Virginia resident. DC just happens to be near by. Fairfax and Montgomery can easily stand on their own merits.

Thanks Mad Jay. I will have to share this information with my fiance tonight and prove that I'm not absolutely out of my mind.

That's why I said "most" residents
BTW, if I ask you whether you live in the Greater DC Metropolitan area, what would you say?

hmmm while a large number of people, including myself, would simply say they're from Washington, DC when in another country or across the US, my impression is that very few would say that they live in the suburbs of DC.

My impression is the exact opposite. When my relatives back home ask me where I live in the US, they get all cross-eyed when I say Maryland or Virginia. They get it when I say DC suburbs.

Ah, that's what I meant...when talking to those way outside the area, we might say "DC suburbs" or "just outside DC," but would you say "DC suburbs" to someone from Bal'mer?

Right!! I think I got confused because of the way you constructed the sentence in your OP. It all depends on how well the other person knows the area. Like, I would tell you that I'm originally from Bombay suburbs. If I'm talking to a person who lives in Bombay suburbs, I will say I'm from Versova, but that doesn't mean that Versova is not in Bombay suburbs. Similarily, if I know that the other person knows the DC area, I would say Fairfax, otherwise I would say DC suburbs.

From another point of view. If I say I'm from Washington, many people automatically assume I mean DC. They sort of forget about that state out in the west.
And doesn't the DC metro go outside of DC?

It doesn't show it here, but there are plans to extend the metro rail upto Dulles airport, which is a good 30 miles west of Downtown DC. There is bus that goes there already, but this will be the first time metro rail will serve Loudoun County.

So any Ideas when the line to Dulles will be done? That'd save my poor husband the headache and frustration of the Dulles Toll Road every time I go to NC.

DOn't hold your breath. It will take atleast 6 more years to get the line upto Reston. I'm not sure what's the schedule for the entire project. They will have the final milestones ready by end of this year

If you've never used the Washington Flyer shuttle to get to Dulles from West Falls Church Metro station, try it the next time you fly out (assuming you can't fly out of National).

I fly from where I get the cheapest ticket. It's usually been with Independence lately. I'm actually flying out next week, maybe I'll check it out. He may miss having something to grumble about.

"Taxation Without Representation" license plates was made public discussion in the late 90s. The vote was made by the former DC mayor, governor and / or members of the board.
The swing vote was the result of people talking about the old motto "Celebrate & Discover" how it did not make any sense to the public and they wanted a much bolder statement to be on the plates.
In an interview, the representative for DC asked "Celebrate and Discover...what?" and named a bunch of examples how this did not make any sense.
